medieval war

I really enjoyed this book. It had a lot of action. Hannah Lyon has a writing style that captivates you and keeps your attention start to finish. I felt the characters' emotions and felt like I was there with them. This happens to be one of the only medieval era books that I like. The plot was amazing.

I liked all the characters. The only one I did not like was the one who scared Joshua by making him do something heinous. Joshua is such a good kid. He has a big heart and wants to protect his people. He loves to learn. He also stands up for what he believes in. I love Will and Angelyn's banter. There is a spark, and they have not figured it out yet. They are both stubborn, hardworking, and good-hearted people.

The author makes you look forward to the next book by leaving you with a shocking big cliffhanger. I can talk about this, but not without spoilers. Please, go pick it up and let me know what you think.

Amazing Fantasy Adventure

The Rebel in Violet, the first book in the Freedom for Rhethos trilogy, was an amazing fantasy adventure full of twists and turns, mysterious magic, a rebellion against tyrannical leadership, and epic battles.

I loved exploring the world of Rhethos for the perspective of so many of the amazing characters in this world. The world-building is rich and immersive, yet easy to follow along with and pulls you right into the story from the first page. The characters in this story are wonderfully complex and dynamic. They are truly one of my favourite parts of this book. Angelyn and Will were my favourite characters. Angelyn is an amazingly fierce, and strong-willed character. I loved her passion for her home and the life she has worked so hard to build, albeit a bit flawed, and her determination to ensure the safety of her son. Her interactions with Will, the leader of the rebellion were some of my favourites in this book. They challenge and push each other to be better. She makes him question the way he acts in the name of the rebellion, while he shows her that the actions she takes intending to preserve everything that she has built, are fundamentally flawed. I am excited to see how their relationship continues to grow in the next book.

The mysterious and unpredictable blood magic was the other part of this story that I most enjoyed. The magic system in this system was really unique. Fueled by blood and ancient runes carved into the skin of the wielder, the magic doesn't always yield the desired or expected results. It feels like there is still a lot more to learn about this magic. I am excited to see how it develops in a couple of characters who are learning about the abilities they possess.

The end of this book leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I can't wait to see where book two takes these amazing characters and cheer on the rebellion as they continue to fight for freedom in the beautiful lands of Rhethos.

I got pretty invested in the story.

The Rebel in Violet had a historical feel, mixed with magic and political rebellion. Will, the leader of the rebellion, invades the home and business of Angelyn. Angelyn is just a single mom, trying to keep her son safe from the evil bad guys. Her son Joshua is just striving for some adventure and strains against his mother’s protectiveness.

I was 100% on Angelyn’s side for most of the story. Will is not apologetic about the chaos he causes, as he’s all for the rebellion cause. And Joshua is just a 16 year-old kid who thinks he knows more than anyone else.

I got pretty invested in the story. I loved getting all the different POVs and getting to know all the characters. I listened to this one as audio, and I really loved the narrator’s voice and accent. It definitely made me feel like I was transported to Rhethos.

The character growth from Angelyn and Will was what I was looking for, and I am hooked on this series. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger but still felt like a full story.

A fantastic adventure fraught with magic, danger, and the fight towards freedom.

This is a great first installment to a trilogy! It begins with a cast of very real people who are under an oppressive and dangerous government in a world full of magic and faith that most of them fear. We get to see how these characters can grow and find their way towards freedom for their people and as individuals. The troubles of the world and the magic in it are shown to us in snippets that get more powerful and more interesting as time goes on. I'm excited to see how they are explored in the next books, especially how the two main countries figure out their internal struggles.

Overall, if a fight for freedom, a fantastical world, blood magic, and conspiracy are your cup of tea, you'll love this.

I really enjoyed the narration as well. The narrator gives good definition to each character and handles the different ages, genders, and cultures smoothly.

A must read!

I just finished listening to the first installment of your book. I was/am enthralled! Reading (listening) has always been a huge escape for me. I can honestly tell you I was thoroughly lost in your world. You’re characters are deep and relatable. I can’t wait to see the rest of their journey. I am going to have a difficult time waiting for the next book to come out! Thank you for an extremely enjoyable book!!

My All Time Favorite Audiobook..and I’m not a fantasy girl!

If I could give more than 5 stars I would! I have tried to get into fantasy books in the past but have always gotten lost or bored, even when listening. I decided to read/listen to Rebel in Violet because I know of the author. I was hooked from the first chapter on! This isn't just a fantasy book, there is so much more depth and meaning woven in. The story is captivating from start to finish with twists and turns and growth in character that make it hard to stop listening! And, of course with this being book one of a trilogy, going into it I figured I'd be left feeling angry having to wait for books 2 and 3. The author did a beautiful job leaving the reader hanging yet providing enough answers or hints that the end of the book was still satisfying. I'm still dying to get my hands on books 2 and 3! I shouldn't be surprised that Rebel in Violet was SO amazing because in the writing world, Hannah is a sought after editor with a stellar reputation. Also the narrator is the best I’ve ever come across. I’ll be listening to this again as I anticipate for book 2s March 19 2024 release!

Wow & What??

The story has a somewhat gruesome hook with the murder of a traitor, right at the beginning definitely gets you, intrigued as to how the book is going to continue. We follow a mother and son as a navigate through their city that has been befallen with tragedies. Never did she think that tragedy would strike her. Nowhere left to go. She’s forced to follow the rebels out of the city for her and her son’s life. Not sure how she feels about their cause. She navigates her new unbroken life, trying to find her own way while still trying to give her son freedom and protection at the same time. The ending of the book is what made me go what?!? Because I was enjoying so much that I did not realize the book ended until it said this is the end and it made me feel like I have to get the next book. I need to know how the story ends. This is an amazing story about magic, freedom, & good versus evil.
The narrators voice is pure magic with this story when I first started listening, his voice reminded me of the first time I listened to an audiobook, and that was with Jim Dale as the narrator of the Harry Potter series. I could listen to Nicks voice all day with these books.
