About this listen

Eragon meets And I Darken in this thrilling new fantasy debut that follows a fallen princess as she ignites a rebellion to bring back the magical elemental crows that were taken from her people.

In the tropical kingdom of Rhodaire, magical, elemental Crows are part of every aspect of life...until the Illucian empire invades, destroying everything.

That terrible night has thrown Princess Anthia into a deep depression. Her sister Caliza is busy running the kingdom after their mother's death, but all Thia can do is think of all she has lost.

But when Caliza is forced to agree to a marriage between Thia and the crown prince of Illucia, Thia is finally spurred into action. And after stumbling upon a hidden Crow egg in the rubble of a rookery, she and her sister devise a dangerous plan to hatch the egg in secret and get back what was taken from them.

WOW!

I am so in love with this book. Every character felt real to me, like there was so much more to each person underneath the surface of what we got to see. I loved the depth to the relationships. This book also has the most accurate, poignant depiction of depression that I've ever seen in fiction, which I really could relate to. The main character's determination to fight through her depression and save those she loved was really powerful.
There was a love triangle, which I am really not a fan of. That's the only downside to this book, though. It was an exhilarating, charming, powerful read, and I can't wait for the sequel.

Very good!

This is the second audio book I listened. I highly recommended this.
One negative about this audio that the is behind a chapter. Cause I did try reading the book that checkout from my library. Even on chapters display shows 33 which actually is chapter 32.

Narrator Not Great

The narrator only had one female voice and one male voice, so it was sometimes hard to tell who was talking. The accents she used also all sounded the same and changed frequently.

Shallow Characters Interesting Premise

I feel like this book needed a better editor. The only fully fleshed out characters are the Heroine and the Big Bad. Honestly the tyrannical psychopath hell bent on destroying her enemies was the most engaging and complex character. The concept was really interesting, but could have been executed better. Specifically the pacing was way off. Somehow way to slow and way to rushed at the same time.

Our lead Thea is unbelievably naive and trusting of random strangers, which is insane after everything she went through. Any time Thea had a “revelation” my response was DUH! Which got annoying fast.

This feels like a first work from an inexperienced writer. I’ll give the second book a try to see if the author has matured.
