Publisher's summary
From a leading voice in the faith and work movement and author of Redeeming Your Time comes the revolutionary message that God sees our daily work—in whatever form it takes—with far more value than we ever imagined.
“The Sacredness of Secular Work does an extraordinary job of being both personally relevant and, more importantly, biblically faithful.”—Randy Alcorn, New York Times bestselling author of Heaven
Does your work matter for eternity?
Sadly, most believers don’t think so. Sure, the 1 percent of the time they spend sharing the gospel with their co-workers matters. But most Christians view the other 99 percent of their time as meaning very little in the grand scheme of things.
But that’s not how God sees it.
Jordan Raynor, a leading voice in the faith and work movement and bestselling author, offers a revolutionary message about how our daily jobs—from baristas and entrepreneurs to stay-at-home parent and coaches—have intrinsic and eternal value. In The Sacredness of Secular Work, he reveals unexpected ways our work truly matters. In this book you’ll discover
• How a low regard of our work limits our understanding of God and His Kingdom
• Inspiring ways your work can reveal God’s kingdom on earth here and now
• Surprising strategies for ensuring your vocation has an eternal legacy
• Vital insights on what God’s view of work tells us about heaven
Combining research, Scripture, and storytelling, Jordan Raynor proves that work, in its diverse forms, is one of the primary activities that brings God delight. This biblical perspective will set you free to pursue your passions and skills and—perhaps for the first time—experience the Creator’s delight in the work of your hands.

Despite the overwhelming amount of resources for time management and work-life balance, the ability to cultivate the efficiency and equilibrium needed to manage all our worthy pursuits can often feel frustratingly out of reach. The reason for our struggle is that productivity and time-management systems focus on individual habits rather than more meaningful and lasting lifestyle changes. But as it turns out, there is a better way to reach our full potential.

Perhaps you feel as if the work you do carries less eternal impact than the work of a pastor or missionary. But that’s not how God sees it. Whatever it looks like day to day, your work is ministry and central to God’s plans to restore fallen creation. As the days of creation reveal, God is quite familiar with work himself. He created humans with unique giftings and interests, specifically so we can pursue his redemptive work in partnership with him. The Word Before Work features 260 passages—one for every workday of the year—to help you see how your work connects to God’s work in the world.

We are constantly being formed by the world around us. To be formed by Jesus will require us to become his apprentice. To live by what the first Christian disciples called a Rule of Life—a set of practices and relational rhythms that slow us down and open up space in our daily lives for God to do what only God can do—transforms the deepest parts of us to become like him.

We were created to work, and our work provides unique meaning and purpose in our lives. Yet today, we are living in a crisis of apathy and ignorance regarding work’s theological and existential nature. There is no shortage of books pleading with people to work less, to find “balance”, to think less of career and more of the things that bring them “happiness”. Likewise, there is no shortage of books making the case that work matters a great deal—that good things come from fruitful labor. This book belongs in neither of those categories.

Story
Sometimes we describe ourselves as trees. When we're thriving, we speak of being rooted and fruitful, in a good season. When we struggle, we might describe ourselves as withering, cut off from friendship and the world. These ways of describing ourselves matter because they shape the ways we live. But in a world dominated by efficiency, we have begun to use more unforgiving metaphors. We speak of ourselves as computers: we process things, we recharge. In doing so, we come to expect of ourselves an exhausting, relentless productivity.

Through personal experience and countless conversations, speaker and Bible teacher Jennie Allen has come to realize that most of us need to unlearn some deeply damaging messages about our emotions. We've been taught, for example, that emotions are untrustworthy when, in fact, they are a gift from God to help us notice what is wrong and where we need to heal. Your emotions are not something to suppress or ignore. They are meant to be felt, examined, and shared.

Could you share the gospel with another person? Would you know where to start? Do you even know what the gospel is? It's the Good News of Jesus, and a gospeler is simply someone who shares it with others. Willie Robertson writes about his story of faith, which came about in large part because a stranger went out of his way—as well as his comfort zone—to have a spiritual conversation with Willie's father, Phil. And from that story, he tells listeners how they, too, can talk about Jesus with their family, friends, neighbors, and even people they meet along the way.

Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Now, inspired by the fictional haunting that brought them together, the friends and former co-stars are examining real-life stories of demonic possession, tracing the phenomenon from its earliest known accounts to its modern-day headlines.

Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.

Loved this book! It just helped me realize the importance of my day to day at work.
I have to confess I’ve been exhausted lately, not resting properly, which has made me “not that effective” to the Kingdom of God.
This book has given me a new and powerful breath of fresh air!
Loved the book! And the author is now, one of my favorites!

Working for Gods Glory AND eternal reward = Mind blowing and necessary truth!
I have journeyed through my entire life and career desiring to be successful and make an impact professionally, but not knowing how to proactively reconcile that with my desire to serve God and serve others.
As an Enneagram 3 “successful achiever”, this book spoke directly to my core inner desire to succeed, but helps reframe our mindset as Christ followers by focusing our motives on giving all Glory to god while simultaneously giving permission to pursue the hope and joy found in eternal rewards.
This book will be the first I recommend to all who work in the secular world as Mere Christians, and I look forward to going through the workbook online and rereading Gods truths laid out in this book for years to come.

A must read for believers who want their work to last!
Jordan offers a rich and extensive theology of work and eternity, showing readers how to make the most of their earthly efforts in a “secular” work environment. He even challenges the narrative that the most effective Christians aren’t in vocational ministry careers, but in your average workplace in the market. Highly recommend!

Really wanted to like this book. Tried and tried but had to give up. Author and his style just say a lot without making much progress on informing the reader.
