Publisher's summary

What is your one thing? The entrepreneur, thought leader, and best-selling author of Called to Create offers a refreshing invitation: stop trying to do it all so you can thrive in your unique, God-given work.

"A compelling case for embracing our vocational limits and choosing to do our one thing well." (Emily P. Freeman, Wall Street Journal best-selling author of The Next Right Thing)

Imagine how different your life would be if you spent your time doing the very thing that brings you the greatest joy. It’s possible, but most people spend their days making incremental advances on numerous tasks, competent at many things but exceptional at none. That’s because for too long we’ve believed the lie that more activity, more jobs, and more responsibility equals greater effectiveness. In short, we are becoming a society of "jacks-and-jills-of-all-trades and masters of none."

But what if you could shift your focus from too many things to one?

In this thought-provoking audiobook, you’ll discover the exponential power of pursuing a singular craft. Through practical principles, Jordan Raynor provides straightforward steps for finding and thriving in your calling. He also highlights more than a dozen real-life examples of high-impact individuals who have chosen to focus on and excel in their unique gifting, including:

  • Chronicles of Narnia author C. S. Lewis
  • Enron whistle-blower Sherron Watkins
  • TV legend Mister Rogers
  • Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynthia Marshall
  • Reality TV star Chip Gaines
  • NFL Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy
  • Biblical figures, a teacher, a pilot, a banker, and world-class entrepreneurs

Too many of us are overwhelmed, overcommitted, and overstressed. This audiobook offers a better way - the path to becoming a master of one!

Critic reviews

"Raynor’s sage advice will be of help to any Christian seeking guidance in finding their divine professional purpose." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"I tell people all the time ‘You can’t do it all,’ but then I catch myself trying to complete just a few more things as my to-do list mushrooms every morning. I’m thankful that Jordan Raynor has set out such a clear alternative that teaches you how to choose what you want most in your career and how to ignore everything else." (Jon Acuff, New York Times best-selling author of Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done)

"In a culture where we’re told we can be anyone and do anything, Jordan Raynor makes a compelling case for embracing our vocational limits and choosing to do our one thing well." (Emily P. Freeman, Wall Street Journal best-selling author of The Next Right Thing)

Discipleship for the everyday believer

Who says we don't need discipleship for our careers? God gave each and every one of us at least one gift. Jordan Raynor gives us the tools to take a good look at what your gifts may be and how to turn it into mastery. Just because it may be a "natural skill" doesn't mean that you don't need to invest the focused time to let it become excellent and praiseworthy. Honor God with your craft and enjoy a share in his happiness!

Wish I read this in my twenties

Read this as I was digging deep for my personal workplace purpose. Found quite a bit of clarity as the Lord spoke to me through this book.

Thankful for people like Jordan Raynor who remind those of us called to edify God in our secular jobs how much purpose there is in glorifying God by working hard and with integrity.

Impossible to not feel good after listening

I listened to this book after listening to "Redeem your Time" of the same author. Compared to that, the first half of this book wasn't as stimulating; but the second half almost takes your breath away like his book "Redeeming your Time". One thing I felt missing was a chapter which could carrye to the damaging effects of perfectionism. With so much stress on striving for excellence, I can attest from my experience with my mom in early childhood, obsessive stress on perfection can become unhealthy or toxic for children or young adults.

great guidance and insight with scripture, work an

This book really helped to clarify the Bible's application to daily life and work life. It invoked thought and joy in the journey to understanding why we are created and how to know how to choose a direction. it was also very encouraging when you are stuck or feel stuck in a job that you're not sure you are making a difference in yet.

REFOCUS!!!

This book is very well written and enlightening. I also think the author narrating it himself really makes it come to life. I will listen to this several times to grasp and apply the principles of doing one thing well, and serving others for the glory of God!!!
