Publisher's summary

"Big Bob" Bashara put on a respectable face. To his friends in Detroit's affluent suburb of Grosse Pointe, he was a married father of two, Rotary Club President, church usher, and soccer dad who organized charity events with his wife, Jane.

To his "slaves", he was "Master Bob", a cocaine-snorting slumlord who operated a sex dungeon and had a submissive girlfriend to do his bidding - and he wanted more slaves to serve him. But Bashara knew he couldn't rule a household of concubines on his income alone. He eyed his wife's sizable retirement account and formulated a murderous plan.

This meticulous account tells the complete story of the crime, the nationally watched investigation and trials, and the lives affected.

Sad Story

What a sad story. As a true crime book it is interesting and it left me with little doubt of the jury’s decision. I wish, however, that the book had been written with a little more mystery. Perhaps there is no way to wonder about the crime in light of the preponderance of the lies and manipulation of Jane Bashara’s husband. What amazes me is how so many people overlooked the amount of lies that were told to them. That is why I think it is such a sad book. Those who wanted to love or enjoy Mr. Bashara kept making excuses or giving him more chances. Also, I agree with what another reviewer observed that too much about the book focused on lifestyle. Yes, that is interesting, but to my mind, it was not as significant as the selfish desire to obtain Jane’s money.

I think Richard Powers, the narrator, did a good job.

Excellent - thorough account of a murder

A tale of murder, greed, and selfishness wrapped up in S&M lifestyle . A complete retelling from before the crime was committed all the way through the investigation, capture and trial. Excellent narration, complete portrayal of the individuals, motives and details of the investigations.

Endless reading of discovery filing

Book covers all the evidence, like a book length news story, but you don't get much feeling for the characters. Surprisingly boring given the subject matter. Very lengthy reading of text messages between Bob and his various slaves gets tedious. My main takeaway is that these bdsm folks are boring, dysfunctional, mostly dim-witted and the opposite of sexy.

Master Bob and his harem of one

A large underachieving sociopath with E.D. becomes involved in BDSM, falls for his "slave" and hires a slowbienumbster to kill his unsuspecting wife. As a family member pointed out, Big Bob's wife of 26 years; breadwinner and go getter, the woman Bob loathed and wanted dead was ironically, the ultimate submissive. Had Bob's wife shared his enthusiasm for the "lifestyle" they might have been a match made in heaven.....Sadly.....*Note: The reader has a knack for female voices. In this story, they all sound like such witless dupes, I couldn't help it- I laughed out loud a bunch...Until the end, ofcourse.

pretty interesting

a case I wasn't very familiar with. very detailed but not over the top. narrative was fine except I don't appreciate men impersonating women's voices it takes away from the story. some of it felt repetitive but overall I would say it was alright

This was something else

This man has issues and is so messed up in so many ways. I felt sorry for the victim and her family. I really don't know how he thought he could get away with it. Everybody know you buy a burner phone for this type of relationships, you sure don't get on your own computer. There is really nothing to like about this man, you have to give it to his wife for putting up with so much from him. Why in the world would you point to the one person who can bring it all back to you. I personal don't think he got what he deserved, what was he thinking with his wife gone there was no money coming in. This is what happens when you get on an ego trip and think you are more important than you really are.

I thought the author did a great job laying out this book, writing it so it was interesting but with all the facts. It was a story I had trouble putting down. I really enjoyed it.

The narrator did a great job laying out the facts the author wrote. The character voices were great, you always knew who was talking and what they felt. There was no background noise, no volume changes and no repeating of words. He gives great emotions when it is needed, pause when needed. He has a nice normal voice. It was an audio that was hard to put down.

Great book!

I thought this was a great audiobook. The narration was entertaining. It had a great background story. I will probably listen to it again. It was a fascinating character study in narcissism.
