Big Little Lies meets Presumed Innocent in this “irresistible domestic drama” (Washington Post) from the New York Times best-selling author of Reconstructing Amelia, in which a woman’s brutal murder reveals the perilous compromises some couples make - and the secrets they keep - in order to stay together.

Lizzie Kitsakis is working late when she gets the call. Grueling hours are standard at elite law firms like Young & Crane, but they’d be easier to swallow if Lizzie was there voluntarily. Until recently, she’d been a happily underpaid federal prosecutor. That job and her brilliant, devoted husband, Sam - she had everything she’d ever wanted. And then, suddenly, it all fell apart.

No. That’s a lie. It wasn’t sudden, was it? Long ago the cracks in Lizzie’s marriage had started to show. She was just good at averting her eyes.

The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from an inmate at Rikers asking for help - even if Zach Grayson is an old friend. But Zach is desperate: His wife, Amanda, has been found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zach’s the primary suspect.

As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda weren’t what they seemed - and that their friends, a close-knit group of fellow parents at the exclusive Brooklyn Country Day school, might be protecting troubling secrets of their own. In the end, she’s left wondering not only whether her own marriage can be saved, but what it means to have a good marriage in the first place.

Wow!! Hooked from the git-go!

I rarely leave reviews but this book was everything you want in a mystery/thriller. Narration is great!! Soooo many stories in one book! I couldn’t figure it out either. Twists and turns galore. A+

Great twist story

I did really enjoy this book. I like the characters and the general premise of the book. I can honestly say I never knew who the bad guy was until the end. The only issue I had, and it's not a huge one, was the going back in forth in time. It's not always real clear which time period you are in if you happen to miss the very first sentence of some chapters.

Loved it

Took away one star from the story because some of the connections were a tad incredible. However, I enjoyed it from start to finish. Can’t wait for something else by the author. Hope this wasn’t her first or that the second one is coming soon. Quite clever and well written.

Hmmm

I really enjoyed the story but it wrapped up quickly and seemed to not tie up loose ends.

Couldn't Stop Listening

One of the best mysteries I've listened to. The narration was great, there were a number of twists I didn't see coming (but they made sense within the context of the story), and the prose was rich. Oh, and the character development was on point! I finished it in 2.5 days. It was that enthralling.

Wow! Just WOW!!!

The best guilty pleasure I’ve experienced in a long while. You won’t see the end coming, I don’t care how good you think you are. A book like this, a true guilty pleasure comes along maybe once a year. This is not one of the shallow, half-baked, low character composition with twists you can see a mile away OR one twist that’s supposed to make-up for a lackluster experience. The only thing left to say is ‘buckle up.’

Just ok

Having lived in Park Slope I was excited to read this. But not much about it, other than a couple references to street names and the like, reflected anything about life in the slope. It could have been anywhere, the characters were not richly developed. A few interesting plot twists but I’m not sure why this novel has gotten the attention it has.

It really could have been good

So, attorney Lizzie is an old crush of the guy who, many years later, calls her from prison asking her to represent him on assault and possible murder charges. He claims he's innocent, but all the evidence points to him. So, we slowly get to know all the players along with their dark sides, flaws, and secrets. I'll admit, there are some twists and turns, but what *actually* happened is so implausible that the story is downright ridiculous at times. I can't really talk it out without giving spoilers, but wow. The ending left way too many things unexplained and I was left wanting my 13 hours back.
