About this listen
From the author of The Magician's Daughter comes The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door, a mythic, magical tale full of secret scholarship, faerie curses, and the deadliest spells of all—the ones that friends cast on each other.
All they needed to break the world was a door, and someone to open it.
Camford, 1920. Gilded and glittering, England's secret magical academy is no place for Clover, a commoner with neither connections nor magical blood. She tells herself she has fought her way there only to find a cure for her brother Matthew, one of the few survivors of a faerie attack on the battlefields of WWI which left the doors to faerie country sealed, the study of its magic banned, and its victims cursed.
But when Clover catches the eye of golden boy Alden Lennox-Fontaine and his friends, doors that were previously closed to her are flung wide open, and she soon finds herself enmeshed in the seductive world of the country's magical aristocrats. The summer she spends in Alden’s orbit leaves a fateful mark: months of joyous friendship and mutual study come crashing down when experiments go awry, and old secrets are unearthed.
Years later, when the faerie seals break, Clover knows it’s because of what they did. And she knows that she must seek the help of people she once called friends—and now doesn’t quite know what to call—if there’s any hope of saving the world as they know it.

Story
Hundreds of years after the end of the world, the Appalachian community of Iron Hollow finds itself beset by demons. Such horrors are common these days in the outlands, where most folks die young—if they don’t turn into monsters first. When a legendary knight is summoned to hunt down the latest unearthly beast to haunt their woods, the town’s new oral historian, Shrike, has more reason than most to be concerned. Because that demon was her wife. And while Shrike is certain that May still recognizes her—that May is still herself, somewhere beneath it all—she can’t prove it.

There is only one way to travel across the Wastelands: on the Trans-Siberian Express, a train as famous for its luxury as for its danger. The train is never short of passengers, eager to catch sight of Wastelands creatures more miraculous and terrifying than anything they could imagine. But on the train's last journey, something went horribly wrong, though no one seems to remember what exactly happened. Not even Zhang Weiwei, who has spent her life onboard and thought she knew all of the train’s secrets.

Story
At the age of seven, in a London workhouse, newly orphaned James meets ten-year-old Peter. Mysterious, mercurial, thoughtless to the point of cruelty, Peter nonetheless takes a liking to James. The two forge a strange friendship, bound together by their shared love of stories—stories of a magical island called Neverland, where they adventure as the pirate James Hook and the child-king Peter Pan. But one fateful night, Peter vanishes from his bed, and in the morning, James is found lying alone and broken in the courtyard outside.

Cordelia knows her mother is . . . unusual. Their house doesn’t have any doors between rooms—there are no secrets in this house—and her mother doesn't allow Cordelia to have a single friend. Unless you count Falada, her mother's beautiful white horse. The only time Cordelia feels truly free is on her daily rides with him. But more than simple eccentricity sets her mother apart. Other mothers don’t force their daughters to be silent and motionless for hours, sometimes days, on end. Other mothers aren’t sorcerers.

Story
Everyone in Foss Butcher’s village knows what happens when the magic-workers come; they harvest human hearts to use in their spells. That’s just how life in her kingdom works. But Foss, plain, clumsy, and practical as a boot, never expected anyone would want hers. When a sorcerer snags a piece of Foss’s heart without meaning to, she is furious. For once a heart is snagged, the experience is . . . well, unpleasant. So, Foss finds herself stomping toward the grand City to keep his enchanted House and demands that he fixes her before she keels over and dies.

Built by long-gone Saints, the city of Vaiwyn lives and breathes and bleeds. As a Keeper, Mina knows better than most what her care of Vaiwyn’s bells means for the sentient city. It’s the Strauss family’s thousand-year legacy—prevent the Vespers from ringing, or they will awake a slumbering evil. One afternoon, to Mina's horror, her bell peals thirteen times, shattering the city’s tenuous peace. In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

For a story attempting to be unconventional, it was rather convenientional
Bad guys get their dues, good guys walk away. Feels like the author swept under the rug how a fairy that killed dozens if not hundreds of people is actually not a bad guy because we wronged them first. Like, no. They imply the fae were more ‘innocent’ before humanity visited, but we literally only have the word of a serial killer who lies as easily as they breathe. Im not saying they could be wrong, but there was a lot of moral complexity the author just sweeps aside to put a little bow on their story

A captivating high fantasy academia book twist with the world of the old fae and bargains
A book that has remnants of long ago lands and dreams filled with faeries. A winding tale of friendship, love, betrayal and determination. A story that feels as if you were told it by your mother on chilly evenings and warm summer nights not only as a cautionary tale but of a testament to the power you wield inside yourself. Stunning storytelling and characters that develop in front of your eyes as if they were apart of your own history. The Scholar and The Last Faerie Door evokes the emotions of a young child dreaming of magic and the lessons of adulthood that stay in our hearts until the very last page.

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH!
My second book by this author and let me tell you I knew I was going to enjoy the story but I wasn’t expecting to love it so much a 2024 top favorite for sure.
I’ll say this is a very slow burn story but so much happened and it’s so twisty o just could put it down so sad is over can’t wait for a re-read.

Great Read
This was a really good book. I especially appreciated the reader. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was a surprise plot twist I found completely unbelievable. The lack of even subtle hints caused me to not believe it.

If your kink is self-imposed guilt trips
Strong writing and beautiful phrasing are the good things I can say about this book. The heroine, Clover Hill, discovers the world of magic and earns a scholarship at Magic U. She meets some interesting characters and the rest of the story is Clover subjecting herself to one increasingly overwrought and completely self-imposed guilt trip after another. Ugh.
