About this listen

In this explosive detective thriller, a 1930s vigilante finds himself in the late 21st century where he teams up with a mysterious teenager, whose looming secrets may impact both of their futures.

Only two people know that 1930s society man Lamont Cranston has a secret identity as the Shadow, a crusader for justice. One is his greatest love, Margo Lane, and the other is fiercest enemy, Shiwan Khan. When Khan ambushes the couple, they must risk everything for the slimmest chance of survival...in the future.

A century and a half later, Lamont awakens in a world both unknown and disturbingly familiar. The first person he meets is Maddy Gomes, a teenager with her own mysterious secrets, including a knowledge of the legend of the Shadow.

Most disturbing, Khan's power continues to be felt over the city and its people. No one in this new world understands the dangers of stopping him better than Lamont Cranston. And only the Shadow knows that he’s the one person who might succeed before more innocent lives are lost.

Interesting idea, but not the Shadow that I know and love.

I want to start with the fact that I have been a Shadow fan for decades and own copies of most of the old radio broadcasts that have been released.

I’m disappointed with the change, giving Lamont, Margo and others magical abilities. Also, how the Inheritance ended up with Matty and not her grandmother was never explained. Neither was why Matty had to wait for her 18th birthday to collect it.

Seemed shallow and I didn't like the pacing

All the characters seemed to lack depth... I think that is consistent with the old radio show, but that seems a little childish for a novel... Also, it seems like the shadow doesn't even understand how his powers work, but he was trained I thought. That seems inconsistent. I think I could have ignored that if the story was more gripping, but I just found myself mildly interested.

Loved It

Upon listening to the first few chapters of this book, I was not sure that I would like it. I was not sure if I could reconcile this book with my view of
"The Shadow", along with my history of the character and the legend. To be honest, I was prepared to be disappointed. Again, to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised.
Since "The Shadow" has long been a popular graphic novel, radio show, and/or movie, especially so for many of the older generations (including myself), I thought that there could be nothing new or different added to the telling of this story that would surprise me or keep me engaged.
I was mistaken. The content, method, and style did keep me listening. I would definitely recommend this novel to friends and relatives.

The Shadow without pulp.

I was looking for to a Shadow novel by James Patterson and it stared off well but as it went on got progressively worse. They could have told a compelling man out of time story with the Shadow as he is, giving him new powers was unnecessary. I personally would have like a more straight forward pulp Shadow story to start this series and then have done a time jump and maybe with better explanations experimenting with the character.
