About this listen

In The Shamanic Bones of Zen, celebrated author and Buddhist teacher Zenju Earthlyn Manuel undertakes a rich exploration of the connections between contemporary Zen practice and shamanic, or indigenous, spirituality. Drawing on her personal journey with the Black church, with African, Caribbean, and Native American ceremonial practices, and with Nichiren and Zen Buddhism, she builds a compelling case for cultivating the shamanic, or magical, elements in Buddhism - many of which have been marginalized by colonialist and modernist forces in the religion. The book conveys guidance for listeners interested in Zen practice including ritual, preparing sanctuaries, engaging in chanting practices, and deepening embodiment with ceremony.

This special audiobook edition includes chants recorded by the author herself, offering a rare invitation to the profound soundscape of ritual Zen chanting.

Grateful for the Wisdom

I’m a black American and just became a zen practitioner about a year ago. Zenju puts into words truths from their own experiences that speak to a lot of subtle, not fully understood intuitive feelings I’ve had myself about Zen. This work has helped ground me, reaffirm my commitment to Zazen practice and feel more connected to the ancestors. Thank you for the jewels of wisdom and your practice!

This teaching entered my heart entirely.

I’m not a practitioner of Zen Buddhism yet, but the way this author puts language to the possibilities of practice is deeply inspiring. I also struck by how the inner experience of “transmission” is described. This book is for anyone looking to improve their embodiment for healing or otherwise, especially people of color.

Beautifully told story of the zen experience

This book deepened my understanding of a practice I have spent decades studying. Highly recommended for the practitioner as well as the curious. This will be a book I will continue to return to.

A refreshing look at Zen.

Zen from the eyes of a devout practitioner with many sides. This gives shamanism a new light to guide.
