About this listen

Wind down by escaping into nature. Part soundscape and part bedtime story, The Sleeping World is an intimate journey through ecologies around the world.

Platypuses are mammals unlike any other on earth. They lay eggs, ooze milk through their skin, and can sense electricity. In this episode, we travel with a platypus as he moves through his nightly routine on the island of Tasmania. He uses electroreceptors to hunt underwater and does a synchronized swimming courtship ritual with his mate, who then digs a burrow 40 feet deep into the riverbank to nest.

This is the world in its natural state, defined by seasons, routines, and cycles. By the time these platypuses are curled up in their burrows and ready to rest, you’ll be ready to rest too.

Despite playing this several times, I still can’t tell you much about platypuses because I fall asleep so quickly! I love this whole series—the nature sounds and quality narration hit that perfect sweet spot between interest and sleep.

Interesting yet relaxing description of the life of a platypus along with the beautiful imagery of the forest captured my attention in a very soothing way. Paired with wonderful narration., water and forest sounds, all combined to guide me into a deep sleep. I had to listen to it during the day to catch the whole show.

Perfect for falling asleep! The background audio effects are wonderful- beautifully recorded and blended seamlessly. Nothing here to startle you, all the sounds are natural: rain, gurgling water, soft animal sounds/calls, wind, shifting sand, rustling leaves, etc. The narrator has the perfect voice for lulling the listener into a relaxed state. The narrated subject matter- facts about the featured animal and its natural habitat- is interesting enough to very gently engage your brain… and then send you straight off to dreamland.
