After lying dormant for a thousand years, the Soulkind awaken. Many step forward to claim their magic, but childhood dreams quickly fade under the harsh reality of its return. Who will wield the Soulkind and who must watch helplessly as magic lies forever out of reach? Who will their power corrupt? What unforeseen dangers will they bring? Jace and his friends stumble through these questions as they try to find their way in a world where the soulkind awakening changes everything they know. The Soulkind Awakening is book one in a young adult fantasy adventure series.

I picked up this book because I am a sucker for a few things: 1) a free book and 2) young adult books. From the second I started listening, I was hooked. The narrator was amazing and did not have any stumbles. I love narrators with a pleasing voice and who can portray the emotion of the characters.
The story was a perfect pace and the characters were well thought out. I absolutely love this book and will be getting the other books in this series.
Fantastic!

I know there are many ways to do magic that many people have thought of. This book a refreshing new tale on how to do magic. But it also shows the pitfalls of an imperfect system. Its a well thought out story. I truly enjoyed it.

This tale is endearing and keeps you thinking. Especially since there are many past and present scenes that are played out back and forth. Characters are well described and grow throughout this book. Internal struggles are well detailed and help you to sympathize or despise different people or situations. A worthwhile dive into a different realm of imaginative fantasy; I would recommend this book to anyone looking for something new and different!
Narrator: decent differentiations, good pacing, occasional background noise that’s distracting but not a huge inconvenience.

Other than one moment of 'oh the teacher disappears before explaining a thing that is vitally important' the writing uses very little of the commonly irritating tropes for raising tensions. At least to the point where I didn't notice them in the moment.
The mythology this world has is interesting and it builds very smoothly, not a whole bunch of exposition dropped all at once. As new pieces of lore appear they tend to show up in context and sometimes as a piece of speculation. Overall it feels very organic in its delivery.
The characters, both the likable and not so likable ones have motivations that are relatable and often more than one dimensional. The cast is pretty wide but we get a fair sense of most of their motivations and see how they adapt when confronted with new challenges.
The narration was passably good. This narrator has several good characterizations for both male and female characters, and the audio quality had very few flaws. He isn't stellarly memorable like a few of the best narrators but his performance was solid and consistent and definitely brought some life and emotion to the characters.
If i had one recommendation for the narrator it would be to work on a resonant base voice. In the fantasy genre we have these larger than life characters like great mythological creatures, dragons, angels, demons and the like. I tend to expect a certain type of voice for them. But regardless I was quite satisfied with his performance.

Some of the characters names sound similar, and that made me a little confused at the beginning, but after you get past that it was pretty cool.
Spoilers
I did find the magic system is a little confusing. The author says that only masters can create new spells, then later a major character invents a spell without a soul kind.
EDIT: This is taken care of later in the series and is a plot point in the second book.
Jace seems to have a magic ability to store memories in rocks, but it is unclear is he is the only one that can do that. Especially since they hand wave it as not magic when magic is “gone” at the beginning.
A fun coming of age adventure

I picked this one up to listen to with my son. We both really enjoyed it. The story was well written and the narration was good. We were both swept up in the story line and enjoyed the whole magic returning to the world thing. The world building was great and the characters had depth. By the end of the book, my son and I both cared about the characters and felt really bummed it was over. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I would highly recommend this book to any fantasy fan.
