About this listen

An Amazon Charts, USA Today, and Washington Post bestseller.

From the bestselling author of Trail of Broken Wings comes an epic story of the unrelenting force of love, the power of healing, and the invincible desire to dream.

Nothing prepares Jaya, a New York journalist, for the heartbreak of her third miscarriage and the slow unraveling of her marriage in its wake. Desperate to assuage her deep anguish, she decides to go to India to uncover answers to her family’s past.

Intoxicated by the sights, smells, and sounds she experiences, Jaya becomes an eager student of the culture. But it is Ravi - her grandmother’s former servant and trusted confidant - who reveals the resilience, struggles, secret love, and tragic fall of Jaya’s pioneering grandmother during the British occupation. Through her courageous grandmother’s arrestingly romantic and heart-wrenching story, Jaya discovers the legacy bequeathed to her and a strength that, until now, she never knew was possible.

What an incredible journey into a culture and history that I had such limited knowledge of. A Beautifully written and told story that draws you in from the very beginning. How often do you finish a book feeling that it’s enriched you? This book does.

Fabulous Book

I admit to having a difficult time getting into this story, starting out with a depressed woman unable to carry a baby to term 3 times is gonna give you some horrible depression. But I pushed thru that into the main character’s story - the storyteller- and was rewarded with a rich & compelling tale that demanded my full attention until the end. I would not want to spoil all the plot lines, but suffice to say a generational tale whereby the modern woman uncovers her grandmother’s life in order to heal her own. I loved this story & the characters are drawn out without the prejudice or judgments they were living during the 40s in the Raj era of India. Take the time to immerse yourself, you will cry happy tears.

Maybe it’s not for everyone, see other reviews. But I loved learning a little about Hindu culture, I liked the growth of the main characters as the story progresses. I thought the performance was excellent. I’ve glad to have read/listened to this.

I just loved it

This story tells of great love, hardship and an understanding that true love can overcome class, culture, war and peace.

This is a beautifully woven story of self-discovery, family history, grief, and love. I enjoyed it very much. The Narrator is extremely talented with the different voices she performs. It was my first time reading this author's work, but I look forward to reading more books by this author soon.
