About this listen

In this tautly crafted tale of psychological suspense, a recently widowed mother resorts to the unthinkable to protect her shattered family. But does she go too far?

After mystery author Diane Christie loses her husband to suicide, she and her son move to the small coastal town of Fog Harbor, Massachusetts. Her daughter is attending college nearby, and Diane hopes that her family can now begin to heal. But rebuilding their lives after the tragedy isn't so simple.

Diane's depressed college-age daughter, Alexa, still avoids her, critical of everything Diane does, and even her generally amiable teenage son, Josh, has started acting out. Diane pushes forward, focusing on her writing and her volunteer work at a local crisis hotline. She knows that healing takes time.

But then a girl from Alexa's college is found strangled. Worse still, the murderer uses the crisis hotline to confess to Diane...and claims she is the only one who can stop the killing. And just when the glow of new love from an attractive admirer begins to chase away some of the darkness, more girls turn up dead, and Diane races to solve a mystery she fears will hit terrifyingly close to home.

I typically enjoy this author and I was very pleased with part of this book. However the ending is just absurd. I didn't find the ending to be true to the nature of the characters throughout the rest of the story. A vague "fill in the ending for yourself" would have been less frustrating than this asinine ending.

The ending ruined it

Great twists and guessing games. Great read. Narrator did well between voices too. Will read another book by this author

Fun trying to figure out who done it. Your mind goes back & forth to different characters. The end is kinda strange but I could see someone doing it.

Who done it ???

What the heck happened at the end!! Unbelievable and ridiculous! On top of too much teen angst!

Stranger inside all right!

Would you be willing to try another book from Jennifer Jaynes? Why or why not?

With out a doubt.

What does Tanya Eby bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think Tanya Eby is an excellent narrator. I do think she added to this book.

Any additional comments?

This book started out with a bang. There were murders of college women, ruminations from a troubled mind, a single mother who writes mystery books, a daughter who seems to do what ever it takes to embarrass her mom and an adopted son who is sickly. Everyone is a suspect and no one can be trusted.
This all is great and the story moves right along. Then here comes a slightly predictable conclusion to the killings and that was ok. It's what follows that that made me almost want to throw my iPod across the room! After this believable story to have such a far fetched ending just blew me away! I don't want to give anything away but I am interested in what other people think. But for me the ending brings this book down from 4 to 3 stars.

Could easily have been a 5 star book...

Potentially good story....interesting characters...... BUT ...all stories have a beginning, middle and end.....this story had NO END !
Left one hanging.......was this a cheap attempt for a sequel ?????

If you are kind of desperate, this novel of cliche, stereotypical shallow characters is not the worst thing. It’s not remarkable or memorable and one of those books that makes you think, “hmm, if this is what it takes, I ought to write a book”.

Tolerable. Not awful, not great.

Book was interesting and kept me curious as to who was the killer. I did not like or agree with the ending. Still an overall decent book.

Controversial ending
