About this listen

In The Tomb of Dragons, Katherine Addison returns to the award-winning world of The Goblin Emperor, deftly wrapping up The Cemeteries of Amalo trilogy.

"The audiobook narrated by Liam Gerrard perfectly captures Celehar’s voice."—Buzzfeed on The Grief of Stones

"This trilogy is as close to perfect as books can get."—T. Kingfisher, author of What Moves the Dead

Thara Celehar has lost his ability to speak with the dead. When that title of Witness for the Dead is gone, what defines him?

While his title may be gone, his duties are not. Celehar contends with a municipal cemetery with fifty years of secrets, the damage of a revethavar he’s terrified to remember, and a group of miners who are more than willing to trade Celehar’s life for a chance at what they feel they’re owed.

Celehar does not have to face these impossible tasks alone. Joining him are his mentee Velhiro Tomasaran, still finding her footing with the investigative nature of their job; Iäna Pel-Thenhior, his beloved opera director friend and avid supporter; Anora Chanavar, his stalwart friend and fellow prelate of Ulis; and the valiant guard captain Hanu Olgarezh.

Amidst the backdrop of a murder and a brewing political uprising, Celehar must seek justice for those who cannot find it themselves under a tense political system. The repercussions of his quest are never as simple they seem, and Celehar’s own life and happiness hang in the balance.

Brought it all together

It is a solid conclusion of the series, most of the lose ends got wrapped up. It was paced a bit different the the first two, and I think they were better, but still a good book and worth a credit!

Perfection!

I was nervous to read how the stories of Thara Celehar would conclude, especially after the events of The Grief of Stones, but this is an extremely satisfying finale. Addison continues to deliver unexpected adventure, new companions, and the background tension of political upheaval. It’s a brilliant book!

Goodbye sweet Celehar!

I have rarely loved a character as much as I love Celehar. Katherine Addison wraps up this trilogy beautifully, revisiting some aspects of the previous two books, as well as bringing him back before the emperor from the wonderful book The Goblin Emperor, where we first meet Celehar. It saddens me to think we may never hear from him again.

Liam Gerrard is perfect as Celehar and voices each of the characters distinctly, but without drawing your attention from the story. Beautifully rendered!

If you enjoyed this series, may I suggest Lois McMasters Bujold's World of The Five Gods series Penric and Desdemona and also
The Curse of Chaleon, The Paladin of Souls and The Hallowed Hunt. Happy reading!

Binge listen

I love the development and progression of the characters and relationships. The main character is slowly growing but the core characteristics grow understandably. Great series and very human for all it is elves and goblins in this unique well developed world. I hope the author is prolific on this series!

A rich and interesting book

I love where this trilogy ended. I hope the author will write more stories with the main character, the ending certainly seems to have left that possibility. This is a story of redemption and regaining of things lost. It’s about how friendship and loyalty matter and that language can’t fight for you. I recommend the entire trilogy strongly.

The beautifully-wrought complexity of the characters

I love Katherine Addison’s writing, the world, the characters, the language, the depth and complexity of the people and plots, the relationships and their progressions. A book to be savored.

Contrived.

I was excited to read this last installment of the Cemetaries of Armalo, however this book left a lot wanting.
Major parts of the plot feel contrived and out of place. Things happen to Thara, rather than him pushing the plot forward. There is little to no murder mystery or finding clues or solving puzzles.
Out of all the books, this one feels the most lifeless.
