About this listen

Jill is a painter who has lost the will to paint. Josh is a mysterious visitor who may or may not have her best interests at heart. Is he there to help her or destroy her?

Jill Campbell is a born artist who has a strong vision of what she’s trying to accomplish. She’s had a lot of gallery rejections from people who want her to conform to their narrow ideas about “art.” In the meantime she’s been waitressing to make ends meet for her son and compensating for the frequent absences of his dad, who is trying to make it as a musician.

Between having too little encouragement from the outside world and too little time, Jill feels worn out and has lost the drive to climb up into her loft and do the hard work of painting. She has given up the very thing that brings her joy.

Then a sophisticated stranger comes into her life who changes everything. He seems to fall in love with her paintings; he also seems to fall in love with her. Jill finds his dark affectations off-putting but sets aside her misgivings for the sake of positive reinforcement.

Which may not be such a good idea. Josh may not be the generous supporter he appears to be. Jill is the greatest thing that has ever happened in his life—but the darkness she perceives is not an act. Tortured by bloodguilt, he fears he may hurt Jill just as he has hurt others.

Can there be hope when all hope seems gone? The Visitor is a thrilling story of love, loss, darkness and redemption.

Wonderful!

Wonderful book! Suspense all the time... Keeps you intrigued and looking forward to know who the visitor was. It is really captivating.
As for the narration, it was good although sometimes the background's ambiance/sounds didn't match the chapter's mood.
I would Definitely recommend it!

Great narration with a good storyline

"Something happened to him when he saw that painting .... The last thing he wanted to do was hurt Jill."
An amazing storyline that keeps you enticed from beginning till end.
The narration was great by Jay Trott the author himself.

Haunting

Jill Campbell is a mother, wife, and artist struggling to reclaim her passions. Her husband is a struggling band member constantly consumed with his success; her son is a source of some satisfaction but not enough; and her will to paint has left her. Until Josh stumbles into her world. Jill becomes alive whenever she thinks and paints Josh but there is much more to Josh than she knows. Josh has a blood guilt that haunts him. Now Jill is faced with irrefutable proof that Josh is not “normal” and that she must decide her future now.

The author, Jay Trott crafts a story around a variety of strong emotions. The first thing that came to my mind was Jill was having a mid-life crisis, but it is much more than that. There is a sense of longing and needing to please while still remaining independent. Trott sets the stage nicely leaving the listener with no doubt as to what is going on. The personalities of each character were well-defined and clear. He clearly communicates the feelings of loss, darkness, awakening, and longing with each interaction and individual. The characters could have been further developed to help the listeners feel more invested in them.

As the narrator, Jay Trott spoke clearly but did not give substance to the characters through different tones or inflections. Trott did a good job of telling his story. There were sound effects to indicate dreaming or past reflections which became distracting.

The surreal feeling of the book was confusing in the beginning but it became clearer as the story progressed.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.
