About this listen

All Lady Victoria Kirby wants is to dig in the dirt, take notations, and record history, thank you very much. Bumbling through ballrooms and getting disdained by the ton for her less than ideal looks, on the other hand, is the last thing she wants. But her reckless father has a different idea for her future when he puts up the ultimate ante - her hand in marriage - and loses. Over her dead body.

The Duke of Chase cannot bear to see a woman misused. After all, he saw that often enough as a child. So when he's witness to a marquess gambling away his daughter to a lecher of a man, he has no choice but to step in and rescue her. Lady Victoria has a reputation for being as tart as a lemon and as bitter as one, too. So, he may have just found the perfect wife to keep a promise he made to himself long ago-to never have an heir. With her, surely, he'll never be tempted to take her to bed and break that promise.

But when he meets the wild, witty, intelligent young lady he's bound to marry, he knows trouble is headed his way.... And everything he ever swore to uphold may very well come undone, especially his heart.

Contains mature themes.

Great story not my favorite narrator

I loved the story, but feel like the experience would have been better with a different narrator

Lovely story

Nice story... The 2 leads were totally opposite... Could have been a little shorter at times seemed to be extra information that wasn't really needed

VERY GOOD

Loved these characters & storyline. I only wished there were more compromises on the female lead’s side. For as great of a guy the male lead was she seemed to dominate him & set aside his feelings, took away his male need to protect the ones he loved. It would have been nice to have a little more distinction for the male voices, I was confused at times of who was talking with the same female voice in narratives but narrator was excellent.

A sweet easy read

This was a easy to listen to, sweet historical romance. The Duke of chase thinks he is going to be the rescuer of a damsel in distress only to find that she is a fiery lioness of a women, and instead she saves him from his own past. It’s a perfect quick read, with lively characters, though it was slow in certain parts 7.5/10 would recommend.

So many questions

The story was pretty good and the narrator’s voice was pleasant. I just wish she would raise her tone at the end of her sentences and make it sound like a question.

Boring

The story got on my nerves. For me, books are a small escape from reality. This was not that. There's nothing truly historical about this book. With a few changes (names, dates, and clothing) it could be set in 2024.

I can't listen to her...

The narrator's emphatic and use of stressed/ extended syllabals to achievd a Brittish accent are too much. It is gratting and anoying to say the least. There is a reason this book is free. I was enjoying the story and plot. The book is fairly well written. However, the author did herself an injustice with this narrators. Enough so, that I am abandoning the audio version and actually purchasing the digital book.
