About this listen

A chilling new version of Susan Hill’s classic ghost story, narrated by Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, The Lazarus Project).

Eel Marsh house stands alone, surveying the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Mrs Alice Drablow lived here as a recluse. Now Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor with a London firm, is summoned to attend her funeral, unaware of the tragic and terrible secrets which lie behind the house's shuttered windows.

It is not until he glimpses a young woman at the funeral with a wasted face, dressed all in black, that a sense of profound unease begins to creep over him, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk about the woman in black or what happens whenever she is seen.

Kipps has to stay on in the lonely house, sorting out Mrs. Drablow's papers. The mist begins to enshroud it and the surrounding graveyard and the high tide cuts it off from the outside world....

Beautifully designed

This was a new experience for me - an audiobook with sound design, rather like an audio play. Paapa Essiedu's performance is incredible; his characterizations are distinct, beautifully performed, and precise. The entire book is effective and immersive (doesn't hurt that Radiohead's Street Spirit is a favorite song for me). I have read Hill's book before, and watched the film from 2012. This was by far the best version for me. Perfect for Halloween!

Very good.

A really good narration, but the added sound effects were a bit distracting at times. Over all an enjoyable listen.

Great story, terrible sound production

A really thrilling and haunting story. The sound production was bad though, the narrators voice was nice and clear, but the voices of the other characters were so faint and muffled., then towards the end of the story the narrators voice became faint and muffled and the other characters voice was nice and clear and loud. I spent the whole story flicking the volume switch, so I could hear what the other characters were saying, then it would flick back to the narrator and it would blast my ears out! I’ve never had this happen with another audio book or audible production, just don’t know what went wrong with this one.

Great story, a bit predictable

I felt like I knew how it was going to end from the beginning, but great story and love the dog.

Scary and well produced

A great story told in a great way; the production value was very high - and Paapa Essiedu has an amazing voice! At one point, though I already know this story and have read the book, I got so scared I nearly jumped out of my skin, so that’s a definite 5 stars from me!
