Publisher's summary

Modern worship leaders are restless. They have inherited a model of leadership that equates leading worship with being a rock star. But leading worship is more than a performance, it's about shaping souls and making disciples. Every worship leader is really a pastor.

The Worship Pastor is a practical and biblical introduction to this essential pastoral role. Filled with engaging, illustrative stories it is organized to address questions of theory and practice, striving to balance conversational accessibility with informed instruction.

  • Part one presents a series of evocative "vignettes" - intriguing and descriptive titles and metaphors of who a Worship Pastor is and what he or she does. It shows the Worship Pastor as church-lover, disciple maker, corporate mystic, and doxological philosopher.
  • Part two covers specific roles related to ministry within the worship service itself - the Worship Pastor as theological dietician, caregiver, mortician, emotional shepherd, war general, prophetic guardian, missional historian, and liturgical architect.
  • Part three looks at ministry beyond the worship service - the Worship Pastor as visionary teacher, evangelist, artist chaplain, and team leader.

While some worship leaders are eager to embrace their pastoral role, many are lost and confused or lack the resources of time or money to figure out what this role looks like. Pastor Zac Hicks gives us a clear guide to leading worship, one that takes the pastoral call seriously.

Worship Leader Required Reading

If every worship leader and pastor in America read this book and allowed it to shape their understanding and practice, the bride of Christ would explode with growth, depth, and passion for our King. This book should be a prerequisite for taking to the stage. Zac’s heart for Christ and His Body shines brightly in this well-written, fantastically organized, easily digestible and incredibly encouraging book.

Highly Recommend

Very well thought out, and considerate of all church types and backgrounds. As any worship pastor should do, he points to Jesus in every chapter and point he makes, and points church leaders to also point to Jesus as well. I will probably re read it.

Great book for understanding leadership in worship

Very down to earth truths bathed in Scripture and experience, now one of my faves.

Wow.

The performance and convincing words of author Zac Hicks are not just for the Worship Pastor or Leader who is always trying to better their craft, but it’s for the believer period. This is a great book and as a worship leader I definitely felt the Holy Spirit as inspiration behind this work. It’s transparent, it’s built upon scripture, full of wisdom and it’s inspiring. Listen to this and share it with your church.

You must complete this book!

This book is full of incredibly helpful insight. At times you will feel inspired, challenged, vindicated, overwhelmed, and perhaps even discouraged. However, I can’t stress enough the importance of staying the course and finishing the book. In the final chapter, “The Worship Pastor as Failure”, Zac masterfully anticipates exactly where you will land if you faithfully follow the journey through this book. It is a much needed chapter of encouragement as it fixes your hope firmly on THE Worship Pastor, our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks, Zac, for faithfully and skillfully stewarding this God-given message for His Church.

For the Educated

While there were a few ideas, concepts, and techniques that I thought were useful, most of this book was over my head. The author strung together words that seem to come from systematic theology vocabulary exams more than your average song. Classically trained seminary pastors, this book is for you. Worship leaders in churches of 50 or less, who do it because you love God and love others, but you’ve not been educated? Leave this one alone.
