'MacBride is a masterful storyteller with a terrific eye for detail and razor-sharp wit. This House of Burning Bones is an absolute must-read.' – Karin Slaughter, author of This Is Why We Lied

The Granite City is ready to burn, and all it takes is a single spark . . .

In the heat of a blistering summer, Aberdeen’s police are struggling: half the force is off sick, leave has been cancelled, someone’s firebombed a hotel full of migrants, and there’s a massive protest march happening this Saturday.

With officers dropping like flies, Detective Inspector Logan McRae is forced to juggle cases and run a major murder investigation with a skeleton staff of misfits, idiots and malingerers until the top brass can arrange back-up from other divisions.

It doesn’t help that the Aberdeen Examiner has just been bought by Natasha Agapova, a tabloid media tycoon hell-bent on blaming local police for everything. And she’s more than happy to fan the flames.

But, as bad as everything seems, it’s all about to get much, much worse . . .

Critic reviews

Dark and brilliantly written (Linwood Barclay, author of I Will Ruin You )
MacBride is a damned fine writer (Peter James, author of Picture You Dead )
Crime fiction of the highest order (Mark Billingham, author of The Last Dance )
Stuart MacBride is an automatic must-read for me . . . always fast, hard, authentic – and different (Lee Child, author of Killing Floor )
Deft plotting and whipcrack dialogue, a must read (Peter Robinson, author of Gallows View )
Brilliantly creepy (Jane Casey, author of A Stranger in the Family )
Ferocious and funny, this is Tartan Noir at its best (Val McDermid, author of Past Lying )
Stuart MacBride is one of the best in the business. Always beautifully written, evocative settings and characters dripping with authenticity and a story you can’t get out of your head. Stuart delivers every single time (Steve Cavanagh, author of Witness 8 )
Hard-hitting prose with a bone-dry humour and characters you can genuinely believe in, Stuart MacBride’s Logan McRae series of novels are a real treat (Simon Kernick, author of You All Die Tonight )
This House Of Burning Bones sees the most welcome return of the Aberdeen-set Logan McRae series and it’s as good as we had any right to expect. It’s witty, it’s gripping and it further cements MacBride’s place amongst the upper echelons of the UK’s crime fiction writers. A masterpiece! (MW Craven, author of Nobody's Hero)

If you’ve enjoyed the earlier books in this series, you’ll enjoy this one (great characters, excellent story line). Steve Worsley as narrator is exceptional, as usual.

Another Good One

I can barely stand Steele and how crude she is. Fifty is maybe a bit too weird

He always writes well and his characters are distinctive and recognisable

Storyline is great. The production is perfect. That is so appropriated.
And of course the Scottish sarcasm is immensely hilarious.
I love this series and all of your characters Stuart, keep them coming 😍

Great Plot & Perfect Production!

I always enjoy the interplay among Logan-Tufty, and Steele. Not to be a spoiler, but I never anticipated Steele at a hairdresser.

I felt there were a few loose ends, but that might be symbolic of the nature of police work.

Among the best.

What a joy to hang with Logan again. The rich language and laugh out loud humor are wonderful, and I was happy to be around Steele, Tufty, the brave little girl from several novels ago, and several others characters from the classic Logan era. And Logan still has Kuthulu. Unlike one other listener, I LOVE Tufty, the wee loon. I has crush on him. Steve Worsley is the voice of Logan in my head, always. Plan to get old with Logan, so keep em coming Your Beardiness.

MacBride is Back!

What was that??I kept thinking. This book is nothing like the previous in this series. The main character's behave completely differently and the story was all over the place. A mess, what were they thinking releasing this,it's a shame this was such a special series with rich characters and solid storyline.

A Big No!

Narration is very annoying, every time The singing from a radio or TV show came up, off went the volume. Character of Tufty is one of the most annoying of any audio book I have listened to. People in Scotland do not constantly say "sod" or "sodding"

What happened to the 600K Logan got from the gangster around 10 books ago? The cat must be 20 years old by now if you add up the ages of all his kids plus the years the first girlfriend was in a coma.

Author has gone political than he has on any previous novels.

Probably Last book in this series I will listen to
