About this listen

From Blackadder to Call the Midwife, from the Cadbury's Caramel Rabbit to Harry Potter, Miriam Margolyes is the outspoken great aunt (after two sherries) we all wish we had - this is (at last) her extraordinary life story, and it's well worth the wait.

Award-winning actor, creator of a myriad of memorable characters from Lady Whiteadder to Professor Sprout, Miriam Margolyes is a national treasure.

Now, at last, at the age of 80, she has finally decided to tell her extraordinary life story. And it's far richer and stranger than any part she's played.

Find out how being conceived in an air-raid gave her curly hair; what pranks led to her being known as the naughtiest girl Oxford High School ever had; how she ended up posing nude for Augustus John aged 17, being sent to Coventry by Monty Python and the Goodies and swearing on University Challenge (she was the first woman to say f--k on TV). This book is packed with unforgettable stories from why Bob Monkhouse was the best (male) kiss she's ever had to being told off by the queen. With a cast list stretching from Scorsese to Streisand, Leonardo di Caprio to Isaiah Berlin, This Much Is True is as warm and honest, as full of life and surprises, as she is.

I can’t pretend that I don’t enjoy a bit of naughtiness - and Miriam is the epitome of that!

This book is absolutely a masterpiece! So beautifully and eloquently written (and read) but most importantly, it just seems so honest and open! It’s so beautiful in its authenticity that you can’t help but fall in love with Miriam!

I didn’t know how long and illustrious her career was, and all the people she had met and worked with blew my mind! I consider myself a fan, but I didn’t have a clue how talented Miriam is, her grasp of accents is absolutely second to none!!! If anyone else had narrated this audiobook it would have been a travesty!

What a gift this book is, I can honestly say it’s the best audiobook autobiography I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to, and I’m sure I’ll revisit it in the future.

I should add a warning that if you aren’t a fan of swearing or smutty vulgar stories? This book won’t be for you. If you’re easily offended by that, you’re going to be offended x100! For me? It’s perfect. I laughed and I cried and for the swearing and opinions to be so open and shared, was a pleasant surprise!

Miriam, I adore you! I’m sending this review that you will likely never see, with a virtual hug! What an absolute gem of a human you are! The world is so lucky to have you!

10/10 absolutely amazing

Much that she has shared on the Graham Norton Show has been reiterated here, however, hearing her retelling of the stories is still funny. If you're a fan, you're a fan!

love Miriam
