About this listen

The “blockbuster” (The Guardian) New York Times bestseller, a shocking, definitive account of the 2020 election and the first year of the Biden presidency by two New York Times reporters, exposes the deep fissures within both parties as the country approaches a political breaking point.

This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

From Donald Trump’s assault on the 2020 election and his ongoing campaign of vengeance against his fellow Republicans to the behind-the-scenes story of Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate and his bitter struggles to unite the Democratic Party, this book exposes the degree to which the two-party system has been strained to the point of disintegration. More than at any time in recent history, the long-established traditions and institutions of American politics are under siege as a set of aging political leaders struggle to hold together the changing country.

Martin and Burns break news on most every page, drawing on hundreds of interviews and never-before-seen documents and recordings from the highest levels of government. This “masterful” (George Stephanopoulos) book asks the vitally important (and disturbing) question: can American democracy, as we know it, ever work again?

Excellent presentation with great references released to the media!

Excellent, though the audio released to news outlets would have been great in this audio presentation.

A warning of things that may kill democracy.

The authors detail what transpired pre & post election & what could happen to fulfill the former president's desire to become an authoritarian dictator if the Repugnants continue to undermine democracy.

A very depressing political book for a progressive

I was determined to finish this book hoping the outlook would give me hope that the nightmare we are living through with a dysfunctional government would end! But the authors were very even-handed in detailing the worst behavior in both parties! I'm a progressive democrat and fear we will be losing our democracy if we don't keep the Democrats in charge! But after reading this book, my fears have become even greater. The Trump Republicans have become authoritarian fascists and the Democrats are fighting with each other!

Book was great

The book and content was great. The person reading should be able to pronounce names correctly though. It was distracting how many names he mispronounced.

Great detail work.

I loved the details. Great fill in the blanks and review of a very dark presidency.

A heavy examination on the state of our democracy

A heavy examination on the state of American democracy after the Trump White House years and as perhaps a new wave of Trump years begins. A well written but searing indictment of former President Donald Trump, his governance, management style, as well as parts of his general patriotic & personal character. A deep peer into so several divisions & cutting fissures within the national leadership core of the Democratic Party not publicly discussed, and a revealing look into the political skill, nuance, and resolve of the Biden White House, and the characters & personalities that comprise and shape it, including some brunt, telling descriptions of his Vice-President. An overall good read or listen, but I recommend a thick, warm slice of Apple pie & vanilla ice cream afterward to remind yourself of at least one good thing we can all agree is still wholly American and, well........a good thing. Enjoy!

Wake Up America

This was a good review of the last few years of America and what could be the last of our democratic United States. It’s frightening to think our country could change over evils of men who are so weak they bow to a demagogue that is so immoral proving that they are no better. God bless these United States and watch over and protect those of us who care.

A balanced and frank look at players and parties.

I enjoy Dennis Boutsikaris narrating most anything; his effectiveness in relating information and details provided by Martin and Burns was enlightening. There was much in this book that was already known but also truly enhanced by so many relevant voices and perspectives. Thank you.

Best book so far about what happened around January 6th

If you are very sensitive to any depiction of Trump that doesn’t say he’s the most amazing person to ever walk the earth, then this book isn’t for you. If you want to know what was happening behind the scenes while Trump watched police officers fight for their lives, then dig in. This book also discusses the mess that was Biden’s campaign and the difficult situation they walked into. This book did seem to fairly portray both past (yes he lost) and current presidents. One complaint and this is my own fault, if you read lots of other books about the election or Trump, there is only some new info and most of that involves the GOP quietly wringing their hands.
