About this listen

The “blockbuster” (The Guardian) New York Times bestseller, a shocking, definitive account of the 2020 election and the first year of the Biden presidency by two New York Times reporters, exposes the deep fissures within both parties as the country approaches a political breaking point.

This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

From Donald Trump’s assault on the 2020 election and his ongoing campaign of vengeance against his fellow Republicans to the behind-the-scenes story of Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate and his bitter struggles to unite the Democratic Party, this book exposes the degree to which the two-party system has been strained to the point of disintegration. More than at any time in recent history, the long-established traditions and institutions of American politics are under siege as a set of aging political leaders struggle to hold together the changing country.

Martin and Burns break news on most every page, drawing on hundreds of interviews and never-before-seen documents and recordings from the highest levels of government. This “masterful” (George Stephanopoulos) book asks the vitally important (and disturbing) question: can American democracy, as we know it, ever work again?

Excellent

Terrifying what has happened to the Republican Party. Also the book covered the problems of the democrats. I am terrified for the country if the MAGA idiots take over in 22 and Trump in 24. Support decent candidates

A Very Good “Read”

I felt like I was living through it for the second time. It was almost harder because I knew what was coming.

Fascinating

Great read! Factual events clearly and precisely presented and you got an in-depth thought process of how the Biden Administration operates and Trump’s strong influence on Republican leadership then and now.

Great listen, with a few complaints

It was a great listen, even though I’ve listened to a few previous books on the subject. This book contains some new information that the books Peril and Betrayal do not. I would have loved to have audio recordings accompanying the places where appropriate. Also, I would have appreciated knowing when quotes began and ended in some instances. Lastly, the narrator mispronounced certain politicians’ names, leading me to believe he didn’t know the subject matter well. I would have preferred to hear it read by one of the authors. But it’s definitely a comprehensive book on the subject of Trump and January 6.

The narrator needs a coach

He continuously mispronounced names. And he was not consistent in his mistakes.
I found it annoying. There were also a number of mistakes - filling in the wrong version of a word that I hope/assume was correct in print.

Brilliant and riveting!

I could it put it down.

A front row seat on American politics of the last two years.

Insights into Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, McCarthy and McConnell that you won’t find elsewhere.

The authors ferreted our insights, asides and provide an understanding of where we are as a country and the challenge we face ahead.

Sober and concerning to every American who cares about our country.

Also a brilliant narration. One of the best!

Most informative book yet on the attack of January 6th

This book has so much information that I think I need to read it again. I especially like the epilogue and beyond, don’t dismiss it. You get access to recorded Congressional meetings that happened on 5th of January, the 7th of January, and the 11th of January. All of them are very informative. Basically, many of the Republicans present sounded like they would have voted to impeach Donald Trump if they had the correct information. Donald Trump lied to his own party, affecting their impeachment vote. If you want to know about what happened behind the scenes surrounding the 2020 presidential election and the events that happened thereafter, read this book.
