About this listen

Thomas was no one, an orphan with no past and no memories of his early life. The only clue lies in the strange birthmark on his chest, a mark that may or may not reveal his origin, but will certainly guide him to his destiny.

Growing to manhood he will become a man of consequence and influence, yet the greatest gift he has to offer his people lies not in his power, but in his wisdom. As he strives to reach his potential he will face obstacles great and small and he will discover that some foes are too strong to defeat with power alone.

The greatest of evils can only be stopped when those true of heart are willing to sacrifice blood, tears, and sometimes - their lives.

Lusam?

This storyline reminds me so much of Dean Cadman's Lusam series that I kept expecting Aysha to be an alternate name for
Sarah. Yes, the same narrator Alex Wyndham so this help account for most of the similarity. I have all Manning's and Cadman's auto books and love them, but this one seems out of place....good book but just doesn't seem to fit. I still find the book worth the purchase but as a stand-alone book kind' a short.

A complete, satisfying story

I would recommend this book to any of MJM’s fans, and Alex Wyndham delivers a great performance. Good pace. Interesting characters and wide open for a sequel!

Diamond in the rough!

An absolute, and welcomed surprise. Slow to start, but brilliantly invests you in the primary characters, whilst unfolding the tale and history of an eternal battle .

Just what you need

Great Story/Performance. A smidge of mature content, interesting pantheon/world. A mostly believable love triangle. Only one hot and heavy scene if that's a concern OR desire for prospective listeners but a lot a cute/appreciable flirting and relationship development. Enjoyed that the relationships and romance developed around the story rather than drove it, it felt more organic if a bit forced in places, as are the nature of any relationships crammed into a single novel since you can really only see the highlights and not the little growths.
Highly recommended if you enjoy character development, slice of life relationships, fantasy worlds that are both unique but familiar enough you don't have to relearn everything, and a quick listen.
Only two ways I could ask it to be improved: An hour or two longer for a more gradual progression of the relationships and story arc. And second, another story in this delightful world.

Great Beginning Story- I Hope There are More!

The story about Thomas and his journey from orphan to cleric was a fantastic 4 hour listen. Manning did a great job creating connection between the main character and his friends. This book would make a great series as there was plenty more for the party (cleric, paladin, fighter & rogue) to accomplish. There are religious pieces to the story, which makes sense as the book is about a boy who joins a religious order and becomes a cleric. However, the story isn’t preachy and the ending had a twist that made me more curious about the world.

I liked it a lot.

Very good. Believable characters, appreciable story, and a world that has readers wishing they could explore it.

Best parts are ones that show the main character's unwavering will to protect the innocent.

The narrator was a big part of making the characters seem real, very entertaining. His pace matched the action, and his tone matched the feeling at the moment. Well done.

good story, eh narrator

I liked his voice and character range but the whispered everything-is-important narration got old. I know it's a choice, he's capable of not doing it. The characters don't always have that extra lilt at the end of a sentence, indicating every sentence is meant to have shock value.

Absolutely terrific

Thorough enjoyment from start to finish. Well written and well narrated. Thoughtful, insightful, and entertaining. My only complaint is that it ended. I will definitely look forward to more volumes in the series.
