We also cover:
- How physician burnout increases the risk of addiction, depression, and suicide.
- Intimate stories on parenting and divorce.
- Stories about cultural bias, moral injury, overwhelm from inbox and charting, and infertility.
- Chronic illness and autoimmune disease, as well as childhood trauma.

Story
Overthinking isn't a personality trait. It's the sneakiest form of fear. It steals time, creativity, and goals. It's the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing it. And it's an epidemic. When New York Times best-selling author Jon Acuff changed his life by transforming his overthinking, he wondered if other people might benefit from what he discovered. He commissioned a research study to ask 10,000 people if they struggle with overthinking too, and 99.5 percent said, "Yes!"

Story
Throughout my life I have done things my way, and they have always worked out - as if I've had luck in my corner. All of my optimism and bravado came to a crashing halt one cold December holiday night, when after an evening out with good friends, I suffered an accident. I was beaten with a pipe and later found under a moving train, resulting in quadriplegia. Given virtually no chance to walk again, I was devastated. But I also had hope, and lots of it. A fire that exists deep within, and has since childhood, burns on no matter the circumstances. I am here for a bigger mission. What would that mission now be?

What does it mean to be an adult? In the 20th century, psychologists came up with five markers of adulthood: finish your education, get a job, leave home, marry, and have children. Since then, every generation has been held to those same markers. Yet so much has changed about the world and living in it since that sequence was formulated. All of those markers are choices, and they’re all valid, but any one person’s choices along those lines do not make them more or less an adult.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Every woman physician should read this
I just devoured this book on audible over the last couple of weeks during my hour commute to work
It was an incredible compilation of the lived experiences of physician women who developed burnout on multiple levels (and multiple occasions) and how not only did they make it through, but made it out stronger, happier, and more fulfilled.
From a smoldering evolution to a sudden life altering moment, I heard their voices of burnout in many shapes and forms. I saw pieces of myself in many of these women.
I also appreciated hearing the perspectives of Dr. Carrie and Dr. Eric Atcheson regarding how a couple experiences burnout within their marriage and family unit.
Dr. McLaughlin thank you for cultivating this work. Thank you for your generosity in paying it forward and cultivating a path for women physicians to pursue businesses in and out of medicine so that we can live our best lives
