About this listen

The #1 New York Times Bestselling Author
A Stephanie Plum Novel

Janet Evanovich's novels are the hottest bestsellers in America!
# 1 New York Times
# 1 Wall Street Journal
#1 Los Angeles Times
#1 Entertainment Weekly
#1 Publishers Weekly

Stephanie Plum's got rent to pay, people shooting at her, and psychos wanting her dead every day of the week (much to the dismay of her mother, her family, the men in her life, the guy who slices meat at the deli . . . oh, the list goes on). An ordinary person would cave under the pressure.

But hey, she's from Jersey.

Stephanie Plum may not be the best bounty hunter in beautiful downtown Trenton, but she's pretty darn good at turning bad situations her way . . . and she always gets her man. In To the Nines, her cousin Vinnie (who's also her boss) has posted bail on Samuel Singh, an illegal immigrant. When the elusive Mr. Singh goes missing, Stephanie is on the case. But what she uncovers is far more sinister than anyone imagines and leads to a group of killers who give new meaning to the word hunter.

In a race against time that takes her from the Jersey Turnpike to the Vegas Strip, Stephanie Plum is on the chase of her life. The unforgettable characters, nonstop action, high-stakes suspense, and sheer entertainment of To the Nines define Janet Evanovich as unique among today's writers.

Critic reviews

“Narrator King somehow makes the crazy, comic antics of Evanovich's irresistible bond agent, Stephanie Plum, seem almost rational in this fine audio adaptation...With plenty of prior experience narrating Evanovich titles, King has no trouble highlighting the eccentricities of the author's invariably quirky cast of characters...King's chameleon voice and ease with accents make this a lively listening experience.” —Publishers Weekly

“Narrator Lorelei King does a fabulous job, as each character is assigned a distinctive voice, thus milking the humor for every drop.” —The Boston Globe

“Stellar voice performer Lorelei King gives a captivating spin to the characters in Janet Evanovich's ninth Stephanie Plum novel.” —Denton Record Chronicle

To the Nines deserves a Ten!

Wow! This was my first Stephanie Plum book and I was just blown away. Warning, though, the humor is adult -- the kind you'd find on HBO. I laughed out loud so many times - I even had to stop the recording once so I could finish laughing! The scene that was the most memorable was Lula being chased by the dog for the bacon that was in her purse, skirt up to her hips and...well, you'll just have to listen.

Stephanie is one of those people that makes things happen. Bad things, funny things, but it is always dramatic. Bodyguards keep winding up incapacitated, her partner Lula keeps getting chased, people she's having lunch with even get shot. She inspires the worst insults from clients and the best loyalty from her crazy family. The emotional tension between her boyfriend Joe and her ex Ranger is worthy of a bald head from tearing hair out.

In fact, I liked this book so much I can't wait to hear more. If you like Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone, you'll love Janet Evanvich's Stephanie Plum.

Good - but could be much better

I enjoyed my first Evanovich book enough to purchase this one, but just after the reading started I remembered what drove me up a wall with the first book. There are too many 'he said', 'Lulu said','I said', 'Ranger said's placed in the conversations. It would be hard enough to read this but to have them read to you is just about unbearable. The voice changes are enough to cue you on who said what and there are other ways in books to signal who is talking without all the 'so&so saids'. Evanovich could do better on this aspect.

BUT that aside, I laughed until I cried over all of Plum's episodes and that more than made up for the overkill on 'I said'. Stephanie MUST be a blonde because this book strikes me as the epitome of the blonde joke, only funnier. I could just see Lulu sitting on the captured man. Stephanie being comic relief for Ranger's men and what she puts his guards thru is hilarious. I walk thru the grocery store listening while shopping and people MUST think I'm nuts. When Stephanie asked to see the stun gun you can just visualize what is going to happen. The men in the control room will laugh about that one for years.

The description of Ranger makes the book worth listening to. He sounds so delicious and then there is Joe... what a delightful mess to be between. I'd root for one and then the other.

One of my absolute favorites!

This is the first Stephanie Plum book I ever listened to (read). From that listen on I've been hooked. To this day it's a go-to favorite for a re-listen and remains one of my favorite in the Plum series. The story is fun and the character interactions flow well as the story unfolds. Lorelei King immediately became one of my favorite readers. Her reading of this series becomes even better with time as she develops her rhythm and interpretation of the characters. Just a lot of fun...Enjoy!

Lots of fun

"To the Nines" is not just a "girls read." Guys will love the rich character development and dialogue. I found myself laughing and enjoying the somewhat predicitable "gum shoe" situations. It's a bit like the "M is for Murder" series, but a bit more earthy. Loved it from beginning to end.

Hilarious!

Lorelei King does a priceless performance on this one. Her ability to take on the character's voices really brings them all to life. I hope they make a movie out of this! If you've never listened to a book on tape, let this one be the one.

Fun Book - Entertaining and lighthearted

While not deep, nor particularly suspenseful(at least re: the mystery), this book does grab your attention and keeps you waiting to see what will befall the New Jersey bombshell protagonist. The very idea of a good looking female bounty hunter fearlessly tracking down a serial killer with her overweight former "ho" sidekick sums up the hilarity of this entertaining listen.

The reader (who I think is from Married with Children and Futurama) also does a good job of imparting attitude and absurdity to the characters.
