About this listen

The instant Sunday Times best seller

"An intelligent, thorough rejoinder to an idea that has swept across much of the liberal world seemingly overnight. Even those outraged by Joyce’s positions would benefit from understanding them.... Open conversation about such fraught issues is the only realistic path forward." (Jesse Singal, The New York Times)

"This rigorous and brave book nails the absurd idea that sex is just a 'social construct'." (David Aaronovitch, The Times)

Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex.

People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

If we recommit to our liberal values of freedom of belief, freedom of speech, and robust debate, we scan de-escalate this most vicious of culture wars.

excellent and so very needed

A thoughtful, thorough, and logical appeal for a sane response to a radical idea. This book needs to be read by anyone who is confused by what "trans" even means. I suspect the majority of individuals are unaware of how gender identity ideology has infiltrated so many aspects of society and what consequences are sure to come as a result. Educators and legislators in particular need clarity about this subject before an irreversible embrace of harmful ideas does severe damage to the most vulnerable people in the world: women and children.

A Must Read

The researched information in this book is profound. Most people are naive about the subject of sex self identification. Dr. Joyce has done the deepest dive into the reality of sex any gives one scientific insight that is unbiased and revealing. If you care about women’s protected spaces you owe it to yourself to be well informed and you will be after this read.

Brave, feminist presenting scientific evidence!

Amazing, evidence-based brilliant nonfiction on the dangers for women and girls rights, the rights and welfare of children, and LGB people of this gender identity ideology. As a bisexual woman, who had many years as an adolescent (15 years ago) of suffering, including eating disorder, substance abuse, & self-harm, I believe if I'd had the identical issues growing up today, I would be told that my pain would be magically fixed by transitioning. I know that this wouldn't have fixed a thing, and I'm a proud feminist and have learned to feel okay in my own skin. As a result, I am deeply concerned about this issue and how it will impact the troubled teens of today, as a former troubled teen. I am deeply concerned about how this issue adversely impacts my rights as a bisexual and as a woman. This book is filled with hard evidence of the insanity of an ideology that insists on being superior to scientific facts and biology, & how damaging it is to tell people that gender identity is the route to optimal mental health when it means sterility & sexual dysfunction. Don't be fooled by extremists who bash the author or the facts she presents- she is no bigot, she's not "transphobic" - Helen Joyce is a hero who I believe 15-20 years from now, will be regarded as a courageous whistle-blower and truth teller. Read the facts she presents and decide for yourself. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would.

A compassionate book trying to understand all sides and origins of this “trend”

Wow just wow! A compassionate book to help understand the many “sides” of this equation and how this “trend” has exploded in recent years. I highly recommend reading this and truly trying to understand with dignity and compassion for all. We need to have open conversations without cancelling, censoring or trying to destroy someone’s reputation or even their livelihoods, because it doesn’t go along with a particular view point. These conversations are desperately needed. I was honestly shocked by how political this topic is and that it’s being driven by politics and even by corporations that are making huge profits from people undergoing these treatments and procedures. I have a young adult child dealing with these issues-issues that we didn’t see while they were growing up and in late teens seem to have blossomed out of nowhere. Desperately looking for answers and trying to prevent sterilization and other body changes that will forever negatively impact a healthy life in every way. This is such a complicated issue-there is no “1” cause of this and after reading this book, seeing that there are so many factors creating this “trend”. Everyday I’m grateful that I didn’t get all that I wanted when I was 18. Life experiences change how we see things, but 18 year olds often think they have everything figured out and their parents know nothing. Ugh. Just trying to love through whatever comes…I’m just a “Moma Bear” trying to protect their child.

Important voice in the conversation

If you’re not open minded to this information you’re probably in a social media bubble, a science denier, or a very partisan minded individual. If that’s the case I suggest basic biology, evolutionary theory, and the political science applications thereof (Lakoff and Haidt) before approaching information like this. Check your bias.
