About this listen

In 2014, Time magazine announced that America had reached "the transgender tipping point," suggesting that transgender issues would become the next civil rights frontier. Years later, many people - even many LGBTQ allies - still lack understanding of gender identity and the transgender experience. Into this void, Austen Hartke offers a biblically based, educational, and affirming resource to shed light and wisdom on this modern gender landscape.

Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians provides access into an underrepresented and misunderstood community and will change the way listeners think about transgender people, faith, and the future of Christianity. By introducing transgender issues and language and providing stories of both biblical characters and real-life narratives from transgender Christians living today, Hartke helps listeners visualize a more inclusive Christianity, equipping them with the confidence and tools to change both the church and the world.

This book blends beautifully, solid scripture and theology with personal experience, and hope to create a work that is profound,, resonant, persuasive, and impactful. The scholarship and the personal stories come together to reveal a truth deeper than either alone could tell Thank you for this gift.

Simple yet compelling, this book is needed in today's society. I was also personally happy to see it was narrated by a trans man, I've realized I never heard an audiobook like that

Loved it

This book was a balm to the soul of this non-binary progressive Christian. I’ve long been an affirmer of LGBTQ+ Christians, but learning about non-binary gender orientations this year and realizing I’ve always been non-binary made me really want to delve even deeper into the accepting and affirming theology. I’ve grown up my whole life hearing the ‘other side’ of the argument/theology, and it’s like a breath of fresh air to read this book. Austen is a great narrator, and his work is really so needed - thank you for making me and many others whose faith is a large part of their lives feel seen with this book. I would heartily recommend this book to any Christian who finds themselves broadening their scope of theology, are deconstructing their faith (myself), who are curious, or who have a friend or family member who is Trans.
As someone who is in the midst of deconstructing my faith, parting ways with toxic Christian culture/Christian nationalism, and reconstructing a more radical faith, this book felt like a hug, and I appreciated the nuanced and knowledgable theology dissections and the way in which Austen approached this topic as a whole.
Wonderful book! Will enjoy revisiting it.
