About this listen

Josh thought he had his life figured out: a successful business, a loving wife, and three spirited daughters. But when he receives a text that his estranged father is dying, his world is upended. Compelled by duty and unresolved emotions, Josh drives his family to his father’s side, leading to seven days of revelations and confrontations. As Josh reconnects with his father, he grapples with past resentments and hidden truths. “Turtle Heaven” is a poignant exploration of family, identity, and reconciliation. It’s a story about breaking barriers, understanding deep wounds, and the transformative journey of accepting those we love and, ultimately, ourselves.

Perfectly poignant

This book was raw and endearing. I found the grief of both regret for lost time, and impending mortality palpable. Josh Culley takes on the soul-crushing task of trying to make sense of a life that wasn’t his own, yet in so many ways shaped his childhood and beyond. This novel beckons the reader to ponder the profound sense of loss and identity. Very likely, it will touch your heart.

Gripping

Whatever I thought Turtle Heaven was going to be, it blew my expectations out of the water. Joshua Culley provides a powerful and intense dialogue as he goes about his journey towards reconciliation with his father, and we get to come alongside as he recounts every powerful second of it all. The author is an incredible wordsmith, his voice painting pictures clear as a movie in the mind. It really did feel like I got to be there and experience what he experienced as I listened.

Powerful, painful, and healing, this book is a definite recommend for any empathetic reader.

A Heartfelt Journey

From the moment I pressed play, I was drawn into Joshua's world and his story. The journey he traveled in the book as he navigated grief, acceptance, and loss was raw and emotional. It made me give my own father a call just to talk and start to heal old wounds.

From Turmoil to Peace: Josh's Healing Journey

Josh is struggling with himself as he faces his father's imminent death. While his father has found peace, Josh is tormented by unresolved emotions and the pain of abandonment. The story unfolds as Josh opens his heart to better understand the relationship that has haunted him for years. Throughout his journey, Josh's ability to look at people with compassion reveals that life is not black and white, nor is it simply gray. Instead, it is a tapestry woven of different perspectives, emotions, memories, and trauma.

Overall, this audiobook is a powerful exploration of the human condition, offering profound insights into the nature of love, forgiveness, and the journey to inner peace. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates deeply emotional and introspective stories. It is particularly resonant for those grappling with their own familial relationships and seeking a path to reconciliation.

Courage confronting sorrow and pain with an accepting and loving heart

We all experience sorrow and pain in life, but facing them in the wake of a loved one's death is the hardest. Josh captures these emotions with such honesty and realism that I found myself deeply immersed in the sorrow and pain, yet eventually, I was enveloped by a sense of peace and calm. He beautifully portrays the dawn of a new day, showing how life continues with greater understanding and acceptance of others.
