About this listen

John Chase has just arrived in Atlanta on a business trip when America experiences the worst attacks in history. Nuclear bombs destroy cities and the widespread release of nerve gas sends the majority of the surviving population into a murderous rage. Rescuing a woman who survived the attacks he must lead her to safety as Atlanta burns, raging infected roam unchecked and society disintegrates into savagery.

So. This story is crazy good. The author also picked the perfect narrator. Kafer does Military/Sci-fi really well. I know this is supposed to be classified as a zompoc book, but it really reads like M/SF . Top notch characters, and way to make the kick butt girl character a former stripper, but still able to hold her own.

interesting take on apocalypse

A good deal of this book was cringe and eye roll. If I didn’t love the genre so much i probably wouldn’t have finished it.

I'm used to much longer books but the book doesn't have any filler so it being short wasn't the worst

just a bit short

My husband and I listened to this book on a long drive across Florida. The book was engaging to both of us. It is fast paced (a real NEED in an audiobook) and the plot moves forward without "filler" diversion. The characters are likable and have enough depth to be believable. There is an optimal balance of weapons, laughter and suspense. The narrator has a great baritone voice -a real plus.

Great couples book for along drive.

Where does Unleashed V Plague Book One rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's hard for me to give any audiobook a place ranking. I purchased this book because I was waiting for the next (and final?) Berkley Street series to come out in audio format. I read the synopsis and thought this might have possibilities although I am not really a fan of zombie stories. Then I noticed that the narrator is Jeffrey Kafer so I decided to give the sample a go. I liked the sample so I purchased the book. Bottom line....I liked it! I have downloaded the Kindle edition of Crucifixion to read and may possibly purchase that one also in audio format. I recommend this book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Unleashed V Plague Book One?

Finding Dog was a great moment.

Which character – as performed by Jeffrey Kafer – was your favorite?

John Chase is a good man. He doesn't leave people behind and is willing to go to any lengths to do the right thing. I also like the bond he is building with Rachel and Dog. I am also impressed with the fact that he has placed going back to find his wife as his top priority.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Pretty much. I'm a big audiobook fan. I like to listen while I am doing other chores and things around the house or when I driving.

And here we go.

Narrator is absolutely great, telling the story line with exactly the right inflection and gravity.

As a goodreads friend recently told me, "books like these are junk food for the mind". I couldn't agree more or make a better statement. I gobbled this one up and then licked my fingers. If you love survival horror, I think you may love this novel.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I guess.... like eating cotton candy, I suppose. Appetizing and tasty but nothing interesting or nutritious, and you feel guilty after eating it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Dirk Patton again?

Probably not. I've read dozens of zombie books that are basically the same as this one: disease, person needs to get somewhere; luscious woman; they keep getting attacked along the way but, miraculously, they make it. Oh, and a 10x dose of testosterone to go, please.

Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Haven't, but I thought he did a nice job. I like his gravelly voice and the intonations fit well with the story.

Do you think Unleashed V Plague Book One needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Anyone who listens to the end (or the beginning) knows one is coming. Does it need one? Hardly.

Standard "zombie" fare

The narrator kept the story feeling real and alive and the story itself was a good easy entertaining listen I can't wait to see what book 2 will hold!

Great zombie style book!
