excellent vampire story spectrum

The differing presentation and thoroughly imaginative scenarios, styles, and perspectives of vampire kind make this anthology particularly enjoyable. With the beginning of each story you have a clear pallette because there are almost no stereotypical leanings throughout. If you can ignore the hackneyed cover art I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys vampire fiction at its broadest and most creative. If you are looking for vampire action and bloodbath escapades in eastern European settings - I would suggest dipping in a different pool of authors.

A little dar for me

Some great stories, Some very bad stories. Very disturbed by a story about a monster that cut up a 13 year old girl, small enough for her body to fit in a box, because he didn't like his toys to fight back. Would not recommend to the average reader.

what a great read

If you like vampires, this collection of short stories will really tickle your fancy. It also introduced me to several great authors that I now love. I had such fun listening to these stories, and the great collection on narrators. Have fun!

Great Number of Above Average Stories

While there are a few stories that seem like the author didn't know how to properly end them, the majority are excellent tales. Very different takes on what it is to be Vampire.

A few gems in an otherwise underwhelming batch

No Table of Contents. Argh! Almost turned it off after the first two duds, but it got better.
Twenty-five shorts generally between a half hour and an hour, except for the last 2 hr one.
I preferred the standalones, although one benefit of listening to an older anthology is that the related series might now be free in Audible Plus (labeled➕). Keep in mind, however, that the narrators here didn’t match the narrators for the series.

⛔️ TWs: Some of the stories involve sex, violence, and depravity.
Ultimately, I don’t think I’d recommend this, except on sale.

Ch 1 -The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black- 47 min -Teaser for the full length book - partying teens wanting to live forever, helped me know that the full length book wasn’t for me
Ch2 - This is Now by Michael Marshall Smith - 35 min - maudlin and dull
Ch3 - Sisters by Charles de Lint - 67 min - deeper philosophical dive into vampirism… via a 16 yr old⭐️
Ch4- The Screaming by J.A. Konrath - 55 min - Classic horror with a junkie twist ⭐️⭐️
Ch5 - Zen and the Art of Vampirism by Kelley Armstrong - 47 min - from the Otherworld series,
full of snarky female MCs, standard urban fantasy, duplicated elsewhere, some of series in➕

Ch6 - La Vampiress by Tabitha Lee - 35 min - its Interview With The Vampire, but classier, and shorter
Ch7 - Dead Man Stalking by Rachel Caine - 57 min - Josh Hurley deploys his Texas accent voicing a short from the Morganville Vampire series, starring a goth vampire. It’s YA, a little dated, not all about sex, and currently the entire series is in ➕
Ch8 - The Ghost of Leadville by Jeanne C. Stein - 38 min - a vampire prostitute in the old west, F bombs, sex, and Doc Holiday ⛔️
Ch9 - Wasteland by Stephen Dedmen - 9 min - quick and creepy ⭐️
Ch 10 - Gentlemen of the Old School by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro - 35 min - “urbane and genial” is right.

Ch11 - No Matter Where You Go by Tanya Huff -55 min - vampire cop short goes with Blood Books series from the 1990s, sloooow narration but fun with vampires and demons at 1.7x ⭐️⭐️
Ch12 - Outfang Thief by Conrad Williams - 43 min - vampire vs serial killers, icky, gory, snuff short ⛔️⛔️
Ch13 - Dancing with the Star by Susan Sizemore -36 min - vampire, ghoul, and lite romance
Ch14 - Trick of the Dark by Tina Rath -21 min - Victorian short
Ch15 - When Gretchen was Human by Mary Turzillo - 34 min - Cancer and vampirism

Ch16 - Conquistador De La Noche by Carrie Vaughn - 90 min - origin story of vampire Ricardo,
MC of The Immortal Conquistador in ➕ , who’s a supporting character in the Kitty Norville UF series⭐️
Ch17 - Endless Night by Barbara Roden - 66 min - 1910 ocean voyage, feels classic ⭐️
Ch18 - Dahlia Underground by Charlaine Harris - 48 min - meh short from Sookie Stakhouse world
Ch19 - The Belated Burial by Caitlin R. Kiernan - 20 min - a nod to Edgar Allen Poe
Ch20 - Twilight States by Albert Cowdry - 46 min - a mind trip that I didn’t get

Ch21 - To the Moment by Nisi Shawl - 12 min - Creepy sex and cravings
Ch22 - Castle in the Desert by Kim Newman - 52 min - vampire noir complete with vampire dame ⭐️
Ch23 - Vampires in the Lemon Grove by Karen Russell - 48 min - vampires as an old married couple
Ch24 - Vampire Anonymous by Nancy Kirkpatrick - 44 min - rambling vampire blog w F bombs
Ch25-Ch26 The Wide Carnivorous Sky by John Langan - 128 min - soldiers back from Iraq dealing with PTSD and a vampire. Ran long with veteran’s issues, but the creature feature was engaging.
This novella is currently part of a collection of the author’s shorts in ➕. ⭐️⭐️
