AN INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER!

Vampires, vaqueros, and star-crossed lovers face off on the Texas-Mexico border in this supernatural western from the author of The Hacienda.

As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters—her home has long been threatened by tensions with Anglo settlers from the north. But something more sinister lurks near the ranch at night, something that drains men of their blood and leaves them for dead.

Something that once attacked Nena nine years ago.

Believing Nena dead, Néstor has been on the run from his grief ever since, moving from ranch to ranch working as a vaquero. But no amount of drink can dispel the night terrors of sharp teeth; no woman can erase his childhood sweetheart from his mind.

When the United States invades Mexico in 1846, the two are brought abruptly together on the road to war: Nena as a curandera, a healer striving to prove her worth to her father so that he does not marry her off to a stranger, and Néstor as a member of the auxiliary cavalry of ranchers and vaqueros. But the shock of their reunion—and Nena’s rage at Néstor for seemingly abandoning her long ago—is quickly overshadowed by the appearance of a nightmare made flesh.

And unless Nena and Néstor work through their past and face the future together, neither will survive to see the dawn.

Compelling love story

I love hearing stories with the rich history of Mexico and this delivered along with a love story n a dash of vampires. I was hooked and didn’t want this story to end.

Multi faceted enjoyable read

Beautifully written, enchanting, frightening at times! This book holds a symphonic blend of forbidden romance, historical backdrop, building dread, and adventure! And I’m a big fan of the context of the vampires and the evil they represent, plus, this is an actual scary vampire book, j

Eeriness meets love

A phenomenal book written by Isabel Canas. Who has mastered the skill of eloquently telling stories with so much depth and details in her characters and description as she weaves together stories of young forbidden love. But she does so while adding layers of eeriness to her tales.

A beautiful story that captivated my imagination

A wonderful story of love behind a backdrop of vampires and Mexican history and traditions, sounds odd but this was really good. All the characters were developed and scenes so well described you could visualize the colors, hear the sounds and feel temperature. The author gave a good glimpse into the importance of a traditional healer. i am going to have listen to this again.

Romance sprinkled with horror

I really enjoyed this book. The historical references were intriguing as much as the forbidden love story. I genuinely spooked out a couple of times. Excellant read. I reccommend this one!

Read it for the writing alone!

"His voice was like coming home. It loosened the unease that had curled in her chest all week."

A beautiful story about deeply transcendent love and vampires. The story revolves around Nena and Nestor as children and how an encounter with a vampire changes the course of their lives. This book lived up to the hype, the writing is beautiful, you empathize with Nestor's fears; your heart lurches so often you can't stop listening. You fall madly in love with Nena and her desire to heal not only the people of her community but also herself. It's a fully immersive experience that you do not want to miss. 10/10 would recommend.

The male narrator …

Why did he make nena sound like that? The female narrator did so good playing nena, she was strong, smart and funny and the Nestor narrator made her sound whiny. That’s my only complaint. I’m pleased to have listened to this book the story was amazing and the romance was sweet.
