About this listen

In this colorful and humorous tale, a hopeful young painter finds herself embroiled in the world of art heists…and possibly responsible for the counterfeits needed to cover them up.

Freshly graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, Veridian Sterling is ready to hang her work in any of the countless New York galleries that are sure to give her a show. The problem is only one will, and they’re not interested in her art so much as her personal assistant skills.

No glitz, no glam, and definitely none of the money she needs to help her struggling mother finally realize her dream of starting her own business after having sacrificed everything for Veri to go to art school. So when she overhears her new boss discussing the impressive finder’s fee for a lost Van Gogh, Veri takes matters into her own hands. Maybe her own artwork isn’t celebrated, but she knows how to copy what is, and maybe those skills can help lead to a discovery.

But when a famous art dealer takes her under his wing (and his charming driver takes her interest), Veri realizes she’s in deeper than she expected, and quite possibly with the wrong people. With her mother’s dreams and her own future at stake, Veri will have to pull out every trick she can think of to wipe her canvas clean and erase the mess she’s created before she goes down for someone else’s crimes.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Emily Lawrence uses an energetic voice as Veridian, a recent Rhode Island School of Design graduate who is looking to have her work shown at an art gallery in New York City. Lawrence's voice matches Veridian's flagging optimism after several rejections.… Lawrence's languid tone for hippies is juxtaposed with the sarcastic voices of jaded college graduates. She smoothly transitions among British, New York, and Jersey accents.” AudioFile Magazine

“Original, clever, and a fun read from cover to cover…populated with deftly crafted and memorable characters embedded in an inherently interesting and unpredictable plot line. Highly recommended.” Midwest Book Review

“What does it mean to be truly authentic? Veridian Sterling Fakes It is about all the ways we pretend and fool ourselves—be it with art, love, or life—with a mother-daughter relationship so engaging you’ll wish it were yours. Deliciously funny, movingly real, glitteringly smart, and so, so alive.” —Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of With or Without You and Days of Wonder

Loved the Art History themes!

Doesn’t matter to me if there were creative liberties taken in regards to the authenticity of the details relating to several subject matters (Art Crime, Passport Processes, NFTs, etc), which seems to be reviewers biggest issue with this book. It was an interesting story idea and I greatly appreciated the theme of art history and the main character just trying to figure life out. I enjoyed reading it. To me, it feels like it could be open to a sequel.

Book Club Read

Veridian Sterling's Fakes It was a read for book club. It grabbed my attention from start to finish. The story is fast-paced and easy to follow, featuring a cast of engaging and fun characters. While the ending wraps up a bit too neatly to earn a full five stars, the book offers a fresh and enjoyable experience that kept me interested. It's a solid choice for anyone looking for a compelling, different read. Solid 4.5.

Great start but needs an editor

This book was so entertaining in the beginning, apparently knowledgeable, quirky, imperfect characters, a bit of mystery, all very promising. About halfway through there were gaps in the story and major gaps in the logical processes of the heroine. She became incredibly stupid. I mean, there were questions she should’ve asked, and didn’t, that were so completely obvious. It was quite exasperating. Nevertheless, it was pretty fun, and I will most likely look for the second book in the series, assuming there is one.
Very strong narration, although mispronouncing the word “provenance” over and over. Kind of a problem in a book about art.

Could not follow this story.

An unlikely story too hard to follow. The reader was animated and played the characters well but I couldn’t finish the book. Sorry.
