Publisher's summary

Don't miss the thrilling prequel to New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin's brand-new series, Maximum Security!

Private investigator Jonah Wolfe knows trouble when he sees it. So when April Vale storms into his office at Maximum Security, all his warning signs flash red. April's been accused of murder, except she has no memory of how she woke up in her coworker's bed—drenched in his blood, as he was shot with her gun. As the campaign manager for the mayor, April's job and life are on the line if she doesn't figure out who's trying to frame her. But the clock is ticking, and the pair must find the murderer…before April winds up dead.

"Kat Martin is a fast gun when it comes to storytelling, and I love her books." —#1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller

First Time Author

This was a first time author for me even though I went through the entire book thinking that I had already read one or two books from this series. After I finished, I went back to Goodreads to look and realized that, nope.... this was definitely a first time author.

I think the reason that I felt some kind of ease with this short story was that it was very easy to slip right in and start to feel quite comfortable with the characters. It didn't hurt that this is actually a type of "prequel" so while the goal was to set up future events, it also did a great job with the world building and the character development of the people that we got to meet..

I listened to this completely on audio and the male narrator - James Anderson Foster - well, tbh, he was the ONLY narrator. He did an okay job. I never really felt that complete ease with the narration, but he also didn't bother me.

The story introduces us to the female and male MC's who get thrown together when the female MC - April Vale - is set up for a murder. Our male MC - Jonah Wolfe - works for Maximum Security (cute name...) and she hires him to try to find out what really happened the night she was found in the bed of the dead man with no clothes on, prints on her gun and the results which said that her gun was the murder weapon.

This was a short story, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now, I'm thinking I'm going to go and look up the next couple of books in this series.

My interest has been peaked.....

Perfunctory

“Stupid, stupid, stupid” … is her repeated internal monologue as she insta-crushes on her protector. James Anderson Foster’s excellent narration couldn’t inject life into this snoozer. There’s zero chemistry, shallow backstory, and an uninspired mystery. The couple of kisses and tepid quickie weren’t earned within the two hours of this novella.
