About this listen

Simon MacKay, the last Earl of Cleitmuir, was murdered 200 years ago because of his family’s dangerous legacy. Alone and cursed, he haunts his home in order to protect the lost treasure. A pastime that leaves him angry and embittered, until he meets a feisty American tourist. Not only is Laurel sexy and beautiful, she can also see him in his ghostly form.

Antiquities expert Laurel Saville leaves Chicago to visit her best friend in the romantic Scottish Highlands. She is saved from a tragic fall by the ghostly Simon. Once she realizes she is not crazy, she pledges to help him find his family’s missing artifact. A pledge hindered by treasure hunter Alex Mackenzie, a descendant of the clan that murdered Simon.

Laurel risks everything, including her life, to help Simon resolve the issues keeping him Earth-bound. But will she lose him forever, or is there a way Laurel can keep him with her on this Earthly plane?

Highly Entertaining!

Simon MacKay, the last Earl of Cleitmuir, who was murdered 200 years ago and Laurel Seville, an antiquities expert from Chicago, who is visiting a friend in Scotland, have no idea what lies ahead for them. I absolutely loved this story from beginning to end! It was creative, suspenseful, romantic, exciting and even heart wrenching in parts. Once I began listening I found it very difficult to put down. Ben Eastman did a wonderful job narrating and made it easy to differentiate each voice. He brought the characters to life and made the listening experience most enjoyable. I did receive this audiobook for free, however I am providing an unbiased review and have no problem recommending this wonderful audiobook.

Narrator

I feel like the story is growing on me and I would like to finish it but I can’t handle the narration. A poor narrator is the only thing that makes me wish I had read the book instead of buying the audio version:/

Mystery, Romance & Divine Purpose

Pretty decent story of a woman visiting her best friend who has married and lives in the Highlands of Scotland. It takes a while for Laurel to realize that she has been drawn into the machinations of a ruthless treasure hunter. She finds romance with a quasi-ghost who keeps dying and coming back, until the day Simon can fulfill his purpose here on earth. Together they manage to defeat the bad guy, at some personal cost; but they find their way to HEA with some divine intervention.
I liked the story, but would have appreciated just a teeny bit more editing down. If you like the details, this one’s for you.
Eastman has a very pleasant voice for narration, but he was a bit weak on Alex & female voices. However, I can definitely imagine him making a successful career of narration.

Narrator

Who ever is narrating this good story is terrible. I like audio books but the narrator is the key, and this one ruins the story.

Road trip “reading”

I was on a road trip with my husband and listened to this book. We were hooked right in (not easy with my sci-fi loving husband)...but this book had “a ghost”....so he was in.

First...the story itself has SO much to offer every type of reader. Romance, mystery, adventure, and apparently sci-fi. The narrator did a nice job with accents and playing those important female characters too. This book got us thru 4 days of travel and I would highly recommend it. Enjoyable!

GREAT 1st book in what I hope is a long series!

If you like a great ghost story about revenge, romance, greed, and murder you'll love "Walking Through Fire". The story has plenty of twists and turns that keep you rooting for the main characters. Usually, I hate flashbacks but this author uses them to the maximum benefit to inform the characters rather than a lame crutch as many writers do. The romance is appropriately rocky, the sex scenes are steamy without going too far and without giving too much away the writer gives the heroine an impossible choice but we still get to cheer in the end.

I've listened to CJ's second book, "Forged In Fire" as well, loved it, and look forward to future adventures!

The performance of the book was solid, with the reader doing a lot of difficult accents with aplomb. I'd listen to other books Ben has read; sitting in traffic it was nice to hear a friendly voice reading a lively, colorful book.
