About this listen

Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individual's place in the historical process, one that makes it clear why Thomas Mann praised Tolstoy for his Homeric powers and placed War and Peace in the same category as The Iliad.

War and Peace was translated by Constance Garnett.

A Work of genius

I first read the book when in High School many years ago. Only now do I realize that much of the complexity and substance had escaped my first encounter. This is a timeless classic and a work of genius. The narration was superb. I was sorry to see it end.

How much time to you have?

I have to be honest, this has been a rough go! I really appreciate Frederick Davidson's narration - he did a wonderful unabridged reading of Brother's Karamozov that I really enjoyed, and I LOVE Tolstoy's work ... but, I have to admit, this has been a really LONG and difficult story to follow audio-wise! There are so many characters and SO many detailed accounts of everything under the sun - it's obvious authors were paid by the word in Tolstoy's era - the entire chapter dedicated to the wolf-hunt just about did me in! In my opinion, reading the novel so that it's possible to go back and forth just to keep all the characters straight would have been a better option! Or, downloading an abridged version of the work probably would have sufficed! I usually do not like abridged versions of anything, but, unless you have a major surgery that will put you in bed for months on end in the near future, I would advise you to consider an abridged version. I wish I had!

Great novel and narrator

The narrator does a fantastic job with a very challenging book. It is a pleasure to listen and the tale is truly enjoyable. Although it is 60 hours of audio this story is well worth it!

By All Means Listen if You Have the Time

This book is read well and is rightly a classic of all time. It conveys the "feel" of the traditional Russia. This is well worth the substantial time investment and puny financial investment!

Horrible narrator

Epic story but the voice and reading by the narrator is horrendous. His voice is the main reason I didn’t finish this book.

long but worth it

I was hesitant about both the narrator and the book when I started about 50 hours ago, but now will be sad to see it end. I am finding that with classic novels, particularly those where class distinctions provide much of the context (Middlemarch, David Copperfield), a good narrator fills out the story in a way my own reading may not have.

Brilliant, entertaining masterpiece

Wow. It took me forever to finish but it was absolutely worth it. I loved this tome. I'm glad I have read this book, and not only because I can brag about it :). It's pretty amazing. Not only is this a great novel, but it actually works as a great nonfiction work as well, because there is so much history in it. And the history is not only war, but also society, and even philosophy and the study of history itself.

I will say that I used the Shmoop chapter summaries as a "companion" to reading the work itself. That really, really helped me; especially in the beginning when it was difficult to keep track of the characters. I was struggling during the first "part" of the book, but eventually I got comfortable and really enjoyed it.

The narrator is perfect.

This book is of course considered to be a classic and its deserving of that title.

Works Well for a Long Trip

I was driving crosscountry, and I listened to this book while driving. The narrator is really good, and the reading passes the time well. I was a little disappointed in some of the plot twists, but there are other parts which are very emotional.
