Best Narrator - Best Translation

Thandie Newton and the Maude translation make for a truly great Tolstoy experience. She carries the story extremely well. Her voices for the characters are distinct and very enjoyable. I listened to this effortlessly for hours. A beautiful book.

epic classic

some reviews stated that the narrator of this version is very animated, she is! Contrary to the other's opinion I think it made this version amazing.

Long but worth it

No one needs to extoll the praise of Tolstoy but I was blown away by the masterful performance of Mrs. Newton. She captured all the emotion and nuances of each character and has exquisite linguistic skills portraying the various voices exceptionally well. If there was a Grammy category for book reading she would be a clear winner!

wonderfully written

The description of the scenes and detail taken to understand the characters was my favorite part of this book once getting familiar with the characters you don't want to stop because you're not sure how they will end up.

long....but worth it....a Classic

don't concern yourself with keeping track of every character....and the closing 2nd epilog.....was most interesting in the philosophy of Tolstoy.

Still relevant & profound in 2023!!!

I marvel at the 60 hours of storytelling here that successfully whisked me away into an immersive worthwhile historical fiction that deeply explored my soul and spirituality. Great read! Highly Recommend! The details of the daily life and times are fascinating. Published around 1867 and still such a poignant introspective read. Beware: it took me maybe 15+ hours to get hooked (I almost gave it up until the romance was introduced!) It was so hard at first to understand where this book was going, and who/what all these wacky characters are! Now it is one of my favorite stories. The author must have been a very spiritual man, and I love that.

Many, many characters. Difficult at times to keep track of them.
It is a masterpiece and for me a lifetime achievement. I have tried for years to digest this book.
