About this listen

Sanctuary is an illusion....

Retired SEAL John Eric Carver and his war dog, Shrek, are part of a small group of survivors in a world where a man-made virus has ravished the planet. Isolated at a Boy Scout camp in the mountains outside of San Diego, the small cadre of warriors have kept their isolated community safe. But supplies are running out, and a team is put together to venture into the abandoned cities.

As they leave their sanctuary, they find the virus continues to mutate. Carver and Shrek soon confront an intelligent and powerful new Alpha Variant - a beast that is unlike any other they’ve encountered. Not long into the trek, they find they are not the hunters, but the hunted.

Has the ex-SEAL war dog team met their match, or will they defeat this new evil and keep their community safe?

Sad to see it end

This is without a doubt the best book in the series. The opening was fantastic, wasting no time in diving deep into the action. I don't want to give anything away, but as with any end of a series, some of our favorite characters don't ride with us all the way.

I only wish this was not the end and we could get a few more books with Carver and the gang.

Not Finished

Schreck is, by far, my favorite animal character. Knowing that he would eventually die, even the knowing the how and why, didn't diminish the feeling of loss. Carter was a disappointment. Shade, Hope, and Kenny were great. The seemingly overwhelming impact the NEW creatures on Carver was surprising and detracted significantly on the original Schreck/Carpet dynamic.

This one tore me up

I couldn't remember the last time my eyes got wet while reading in the genre......until now. Walt Browning has a unique way of bringing you into his story and seeing things through the eyes of his characters. "Because I am Shrek.....I am the ghost that kills in the night". Just typing those words drags me back into that 4-legged warrior and the exceptional personality that Mr. Browning gave him.

Kudos to you, Mr. Brown. I was sad to see Carver close his chapter. However, you MUST realize you left the perfect opening to continue this universe, right? I certainly hope to see more adventures with Carver and his 4-legged partner. If this series doesn't have you aching for more, you aren't alive.

OH MY..

Great series. Great ending. Just GREAT! BUT... I WANT MORE! I love you Shrek. I love how the true power of man's best friend is brought to life in this series. I love being in Shrek's point of view. There is one part that I wasn't expecting in this book and at first wasn't too happy, but that was short lived.. All in all couldn't have been written better. Couldn't have ended better. Enjoy my friends.. you won't regret it. Thank you very much Walt and Bronson.

Amazing action packed adventure creating an emotional roller coaster for the listener.

I thought the prior book was the best in the series but I think this one tops it. With action and unexpected twists it keeps you on the edge. Many times thinking your at the end of the book but he seems to keep things going when all seems hopeless. With a very touching and fitting end to the story that may bring tears. It did for me.

The business!

Loved the series! Very different & captivating spin on a tired played out zombie story line. Each character was perfect and the idea to talk about themselves in the 3rd person giving the impression you could hear their thoughts was brilliant!

great story writing

Walt Browning writes a great story I do think the Extinction cycle books need a continuity wiki or timeline for other authors to follow. while the original books and NSS left a lot on the west half of the US alone leaving it open for stories to be made there are some major events that should be tracked and story telling decisions made based on those. (operation Liberty and the use of both of Kate's bio weapons that wipes out 90% of the infected and put a stop to the spread of the virus, also the events of ROT attempting a coup by reinfecting outposts, the red webbing for the Dark age sequel books and the collapse of that with the anthrax as well as the emergence of the chimaeras.)

I do hope NSS and other authors continue to build on this world. I still don't thing Kate is going to get away clean after hooking herself to the red webbing network and I would like to see what happens with the friendly chimaeras being integrated into the world. What happens when a human and a chimaera develop emotional and physical connections?
