About this listen

It's autumn in Connecticut. Melanie Travis has just started a new job, and with the added excitement of showing her Standard Poodle, Faith, in the fall shows, the last thing she wants is to become embroiled in yet another of her brother Frank's moneymaking schemes. His current brainstorm - remaking an old store in stylish suburban Fairfield County into a trendy coffee bar - already has the neighbors snarling. Worse, wealthy Marcus Rattigan, who's bankrolling the project, is found murdered on the premises, and the police think Frank did it. Always the family watchdog, and faced with Frank's imminent arrest, Melanie has no choice but to take on the investigation. Drawing on her connections in the dog world, Melanie is soon successfully unmuzzling the dead man's nearest and dearest, including a bitter ex-wife, a spurned mistress, and an ambitious second in command. But Melanie is about to learn that being a watchdog can sometimes be dangerous - especially when every clue she uncovers leads her one step closer to a murderer who is desperate enough to kill again....

Critic reviews

"Fresh, lively writing, a tough mystery, light humor, and insight into the peculiarities of human and canine behavior." (Booklist)

Fun story especially for dog folk. Narrated at the speed of light. SLOW DOWN. Love aunt peg

Fun story

I just love stories with dogs in them! while I tend to gravitate towards more serious murder mysteries and action books, this story was amusing and enjoyable.

Every book gets better and better. I thought the last one was really good but this one tops it. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

I do enjoy this series. lots of twists and turns before the person who did the murder is revealed. sometimes I get lost on the characters but I do enjoy. just the right amount of love interest. Fun

The story is great. The reader diminished story by racing through the text, missing great opportunities to bring out the drama.

Loved it

The narrator has a voice of a 12 year old and speed reads the book.

The main character of Melanie Travis is a whiny girl who is foolish in accosting murderers (she should’ve died off in the first book) and KGB or Gestapo-like in her treatment of “suspects”. It’s unrealistic that she could behave that way and not shoved out the door or worse.

I’m reading it (listening) because it is free and doesn’t require close attention while doing chores or while navigating city streets for my work.

Don’t spend a credit for it - it’s not worth it.

Warning - listen to the free sample first!!!!

I do not hear as fast as the reader reads. And yells often though the book

Reader is too fast

The story was good and informs about the dog show world. However, the narrator read too fast and in an annoying high-pitched voice. I had to slow the story to .8 to be able to tolerate the narrator.

Annoying Narrator but cute story
