About this listen
An honest, sharp-witted, practical guide to help you get and keep the job you want - from an outsider whose been there and done it, a woman who went from being a broke, divorced college dropout to running some of the biggest websites in the world.
Jennifer Romolini started her career as an awkward 27-year-old misfit, navigated her way through New York media, and became a boss - an editor in chief, an editorial director, and a vice president - all within little more than a decade. Her book, Weird in a World That's Not, asserts that being outside the norm and achieving real, high-level success are not mutually exclusive, even if the perception of the business world often seems otherwise, even if it seems like only office-politicking extroverts are set up for reward.
Part career memoir, part real-world guide, Weird in a World That's Not offers relatable advice on how to achieve your dreams, even when the odds seem stacked against you. Romolini helps you face down your fears, find a career that's right for you, and get and keep a job. She tackles practical issues and offers empathetic, clear-cut answers to important questions:
- How do I navigate the awkwardness of networking?
- How do I deal with intense office politics?
- How do I leave my crappy job?
- How do I learn how to be a boss not just a #boss?
- And, most importantly: How do I do all this and stay true to who I really am?
Authentic, funny, and moving, Weird in a World That's Not will help you tap in to your inner tenacity and find your path, no matter how offbeat you are.

Story
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

In his early 20s, Curtis Jackson, known as 50 Cent, rose to the heights of fame and power in the cutthroat music business. A decade ago, the multi-platinum selling rap artist decided to pivot. His ability to adapt to change was demonstrated when he became the executive producer and star of Power, a high-octane, gripping crime drama centered around a drug kingpin's family. The series quickly became "appointment" television, leading to Jackson inking a four-year, $150 million contract with the Starz network - the most lucrative deal in premium cable history.

The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion - it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was there that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees.

Story
The first full-length biography of the Nobel laureate to appear in a quarter century, Mad at the World illuminates what has made the work of John Steinbeck an enduring part of the literary canon: his capacity for empathy. Angered by the plight of the Dust Bowl migrants who were starving even as they toiled to harvest California's limitless bounty and appalled by the country's refusal to recognize the humanity common to all of its citizens, Steinbeck took a stand against social injustice - paradoxically given his inherent misanthropy.

Wow must relatable book to everyone.
Im guy and this book is definitely meant and geared towards women. Nevertheless the author absolutely nailed this book as a must read for everyone. Especially women, especially young people, and especially everyone of all types. Out of all the books I’ve read and listen to in the self help motivational way this is by far hands down the most relatable worth every penny book ever. Also can’t say enough about the narrator. She nailed ever pitch and tone. Maybe this one of the most enjoyable books to listen to. This is the only book I’ve ever given 5 stars to across the board. This book is wow.

A Career Guide that Delivers
Jennifer Romolini delivers on her promise of a career guide for those of us that don't fit the more traditional business / motivational books out there. Her book is both personal and practical. The narration by Em Eldridge is excellent as well.

Women's Career Guide
I totally missed that this book is for women. As a man who has struggled with my own share of career ups and downs, the book was still helpful. Toward the beginning there is a bit too much story telling without interpreting what lessons we should be learning from these stories. Toward the end the author gets into bullet points for success and synthesizing takeaway lessons.
Romolini has a really entertaining story that contains gems of insight and inspiration. I found myself piecing together the timelines in my mind and wanting to know more about her career trajectory than the book would tell me. She is raw and vulnerable and gives her audience person to be messy and flawed and admit mistakes.
Em Eldridge rocks the performance of this book. She tells the story with the pride, humility and ambivalence that I would only expect from the original author. I remember checking a couple of times to confirm that it wasn't the author herself reading this autobiography.

Insightful
Amazing advice. Targeted more towards women (at least from how I interpreted the language), there’s still a lot of useful things for men. Even if it’s just noting how some of the men in the author’s life have treated her (spoiler: not well). It’s inspiring and lights a fire in your chest, whether there’s breast milk there to start or not. An absolute must read for anyone who feels like they’ve fallen between the cracks.

Going from Young Intern to a Boss
This is a fantastic overview of a woman’s ascension to success in the workplace. I specifically mention ascent because there was nothing easy in Jennifer’s career. Unlike most college-aged people, she gets married quite young and struggles with low paying jobs. After her divorce, she eventually goes back to school and finishes college. She worked her way up the ranks in the magazine world and then to online content. With each change in position she learns a new lesson. My main takeaway from this book is that as a working woman you have ALL the control of your career. Also, you are capable of examining what you don’t like and what you do like and determining these preferences are what shape your career. There are also a lot of helpful tips on how to network as an awkward person.
This is a fantastic book for any woman maneuvering her career goals or a woman entering the work force.

She spoke right to my insecure soul
I don't doubt that I'll play this book again and again, she is assuring, honest and optimistic enough to light a fire under your ass. I probably fall exactly in with the target audience, I have no problem with the swearing (if you're sensitive to it though, there's a lot). Thoroughly enjoyed her included personal history and the advice given feels applicable and usable. Super, super loved this!

A glorified Cosmo article packed with platitudes
Once you get past the first few chapters that are all about the author’s (relatively unremarkable) personal story, told as if she’s some kind of corporate pioneer, you’re offered generic platitudes as “advice,” all of which might as well all be on those “hang in there” inspirational posters on corporate and career counselor office walls. I kid you not when the “most important advice in the entire book,” according to the author, is to “get really good at something.” And “work hard.” Wow. Thanks. So Inspirational and insightful. A book that proclaims to be about being “wired in a world that’s not” sure offers a lot of advice about how exactly to be as normal and run of the mill as possible. Pass.
