About this listen
Join the entire Dunder Mifflin gang on a journey back to Scranton: Here's the hilarious inside story of how a little show that barely survived its first season became the most watched series in the universe.
Based on hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews with the cast and creators of The Office - the actors, writers, producers, directors, network execs, and crew, and read by Brian Baumgartner, Ben Silverman, Greg Daniels, Bronson Pinchot, Marin Ireland, MacLeod Andrews, Brittany Pressley, Prentice Onayemi, Gabra Zackman, James Meunier, Alister Austin, Michael Crouch, Bryson Carr, James Fouhey, Graham Halstead, Gary Tiedemann, Curt Bonnem, Oliver Wyman, James Patrick Cronin, Joel Froomkin, Rainn Valdez, Patricia Santomasso, Laruen Fortgang, Stacey Glemboski, Andi Arndt, Amy Landon, Lisa Flanagan, and Robin Miles.
“This book is full of the memories and stories of the cast and crew and how we all found our way to each other, from everyone’s point of view.... It’s pretty great.” (Greg Daniels)
In this definitive oral history - including the voices of the actors, writers, producers, directors, network execs, and crew - Welcome to Dunder Mifflin pulls back the curtain as never before on all the absurdity, genius, love, passion, and dumb luck that went into creating the beloved show.
Featuring a foreword by Greg Daniels, who adapted the series for the US and was its guiding creative force, and narrated by star Brian Baumgartner (a.k.a. “Kevin Malone”) and executive producer Ben Silverman, here at last is the indispensable Office book.
Includes original interviews with Steve Carell, John Krasinkski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Angela Kinsey, Craig Robinson, Phyllis Smith, Kate Flannery, Ed Helms, Oscar Nunez, Amy Ryan, Ellie Kemper, Creed Bratton, Paul Lieberstein, Greg Daniels, Ben Silverman, Mike Schur, Ricky Gervais, and many more.

Most people think of themselves as “good", but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad” - especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia, and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more, so we can sound cool at parties and become better people.

Jenna Fischer's Hollywood journey began at the age of 22 when she moved to Los Angeles from her hometown of St. Louis. She was determined, confident, and ready to work hard. So, what could go wrong? Uh, basically everything. The path to being a professional actor was so much more vast and competitive than she’d imagined. It would be eight long years before she landed her iconic role on The Office, nearly a decade of frustration, rejection, and doubt. If only she’d had a handbook for the aspiring actor. Or, better yet, someone to show her the way. Jenna wants to be that person for you.

Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a best-selling book of the same name. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Rainn Wilson’s memoir about growing up geeky and finally finding his place in comedy, faith, and life. For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone's favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a best-selling book of the same name. He also started a hilarious Twitter feed (sample tweet: “I'm not on Facebook” is the new “I don't even own a TV”).

Story
In October of 2013, Drew Hayes began posting a story to his website. Written over the thirteen days leading up to Halloween, when each chapter ended the next step was chosen by the readers. Sometimes this led to great discoveries and triumphs, other paths led to Dead Ends, though even in those there was much to be gleaned. For ten years, this tradition occurred, until in the year of 2022, the readers chose a finale. This is their story: a tale of deaths and decisions that spanned a decade.

“As Albert Einstein almost certainly never said, everyone is a genius—but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” So begins Katie Spalding’s spunky takedown of the Western canon, and how genius may not be as irrefutably great as we commonly understand. While most of us may never become Einstein, it may surprise you to learn that there’s probably a bunch of stuff you can do that Einstein couldn’t. And, as Spalding shows, the famous prodigies she explores here were quite odd by any definition.

On May 25, 1977, a problem-plagued, budget-straining, independent science-fiction film opened in a mere 32 American movie theatres. Conceived, written, and directed by a little-known filmmaker named George Lucas, Star Wars reinvented the cinematic landscape, ushering in a new way for movies to be made, marketed, and merchandised. Simply put, George Lucas is one of the most influential filmmakers of the past 50 years.

Cult of the Dead Cow is the tale of the oldest, most respected, and most famous American hacking group of all time. Though until now it has remained mostly anonymous, its members invented the concept of hacktivism. Today, the group and its followers are battling electoral misinformation, making personal data safer, and battling to keep technology a force for good instead of for surveillance and oppression. Cult of the Dead Cow shows how governments, corporations, and criminals came to hold immense power over individuals and how we can fight back against them.

The good: I actually was not aware of his podcast and only learned about it from The Office Ladies podcast. I wrongly assumed that his book would cover the same things discussed on TOL podcast. Lotsa stories and details and interviews that make the book full of differing and new perspectives.
More than you’d expect…but one drawback

I have seen all of the DVD extras, listen to The Office Ladies podcast, and listened to Andy Greene's book. There haven't been any big surprises in reading this.
I would still recommend that anyone read this, though. If you like the history of TV in general or adore Greg Daniels, there are fantastic insights. If you are a regular fan, you may learn a ton. If you have already exhausted all other resources and are dying to get something new and juicy, that is probably an unrealistic expectation, but you will probably still want to read it and get a bit of your fix.
Maybe I am trying to squeeze water from a stone at this point. I definitely still give it 5 stars. If you haven't been sucking the bones and chewing the fat of The Office trivia for many years, this will be completely amazing! And everything about the writing and the voice acting is absolutely top-notch. It actually may be the best audiobook that I have ever listened to, if I'm being objective.
The overall sensory experience has been pleasant. I could do with fewer swear words, but that's a matter of taste. The casting and production really is phenomenal.
I'm just evaluating where I want to go from here. What am I doing with my life? Maybe Rainn Wilson was right and I do need to watch other things.
Great! Not Much Unique If You Have Exhausted All Other Sources.
