I Was Totally Enthralled

The blurb for this book starts with:
Good parents will go to any lengths to protect their children.
The Hillens are very good parents.
But with all the secrets in the HIllen household, the biggest one is hiding right under their noses.

One day their 6-year-old son Bailey found an abandoned puppy in a basket on their porch, in the basket with the puppy was the following letter to the Hillens

Dear Hillens
I met you several years ago. You won't remember the incident, but your kindness saved my life. I hope that your kindness can extend to my little Laylea as well.
There is an evil man who would do experiments on Laylea and her brothers. Because of this, they have spent their lives thus far in a basement, not seeing anything of the world.
Two days ago, this man found our sanctuary. We escaped but I dare not foster any of my pups together or to people that know me. I know Laylea would be safe with you and that you are up to the challenges that raising her will present. She is a very special little girl. Please take care of her.
Though I am heartbroken to leave my puppy, I am comforted knowing she will be as happy as Bailey and Woodford were when I knew them. She is eight weeks old and just weaned.
With Great Appreciation for whatever help you can give her,
Mama

This was the beginning of what for me at least was one of the most exciting and moving stories I have had the pleasure of listening to in quite some time. The author of this book, Gwendolyn Druyor, is also the narrator and perhaps that helped bring so much depth and feeling to this story. We find as the book progresses that Clark and Sher Hillen are hiding from the thoroughly evil Consortium, who kidnap and experiment on people to turn them into super soldiers or weapons with no regard at all to human life. Clark himself was one of these experiments but Sher helped rescue him. Sher was once employed by the Consortium (who from now on I will refer to as TC) but when she realized the depths they were sinking to she blew up the lab and set free as many of the volunteers as she could. Sher and Clark, together with other escapees, now work to defeat TC.

As the book progressed we meet a lot more escapees from TC and follow the steps being taken by the two people running these terrible experiments, Walker and Trask.

The story is told from many perspectives, but from Laylea's mostly. Laylea or LG as most of them call her is no ordinary puppy, Bailey Hillen is no ordinary boy how could he be when his mother Sher is a witch and his father Clark has been enhanced?

The story covers many years, starting when Bailey is 6 and ending when he leaves for college. In between the Hillens and their dogs face many difficulties and have to make many hard choices. I would love to tell you more but that would involve spoilers and I don't want to do that - this book is far too good to have it spoilt knowing what is to follow.

Suffice to say I was totally enthralled through the whole of this book and I can not wait to start the next installment of this beautifully well written and well-performed book. I laughed, I cried and I experienced fear for the Hillens but I also felt their love and closeness. What more can you ask of an author?

I was given this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

Great Read

WereHuman: The Witch's Daughter (Consortium Battle #1) was a great read by Gwendolyn Druyor. The Hillens will go to any lengths to protect their children. Their six year old child Bailey, finds a puppy abandoned in a basket on their porch. Clark and Sher would have never expected that the puppy was a werehuman, which is an animal that can change into a person. No the genetic engineers of The Consortium are searching for them and their new pet. They want to make them their newest test subjects. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Interesting

This one was a little slow to get started, I wasn’t too sure where the story was going or what exactly it was about. About half way through it caught me attention and it became more interesting.

I really liked this one

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a great book for fans of the urban fantasy genre. It seems to be geared towards fans of all ages. I though the author does a great job of building the world and developing some interesting characters. The narration is well done and made for a fun listen. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for an urban/contemporary fantasy story that isn't full of sex and gratuitous violence. I have no issues with those things, but sometimes you want a story you can share with your kids.

If you love urban fantasy and animals get the book

This book starts out with a rather slow-burn, but it was intriguing enought to hold my interest throughout the beginning chapters, and Gwendolyn Druyor's superb narration more than makes up for any perceived shortcomings (lack of action) the book may have... In this tale, the Hillens are practicing their best defense by hiding themselves amongst the "normals" in a small Oregon town and raising their son... You will find they are anything but normal... At the beginning of the book they find an abandoned puppy on their doorstep, along with a letter addressed to them, asking that they take care of this precious pup, named Laylea... Laylea is not normal either and most of the story is written from her eye view... as the story progresses things heat up to a powerful ending crescendo...
If you love urban fantasy and animals, this was written for you!

Good character driven story

Really enjoyed the characters in this book. Each person is vastly unique and likable, unless they weren't supposed to be. Only complaint is the story moved a little slow at times. Good listen though!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It has a lot of suspense and humor in it. The narrator has done a great job of bringing each character to life.

Interesting

This was a long unusual story. A family unit and extended misfits of a strange society. Seems nothing is going on most of the book as the characters are being built. Then suddenly things change at the last moment and you say to yourself “what??” I actually had to go back several times to see if I was missing something. Not that I did not like the book only that not much seems to happen for a long time. Loved Bailey . Great job on audio. I received this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review. 👍🏻

This is a Interesting take on Shifters and Witches

This was an enjoyable read and I liked the different take the author uses. You have a family of people with different problems and abilities staying hidden from the Consortium. The Consortium is a group of scientists who are looking to change people and animals for the own purposes. Narrator does a Great job with the various characters voices and the entire storyline.
