About this listen

Former middle school teacher and teachers' advocate Taylor Mali struck a chord with his passionate response to a man at a dinner party who asked him what kind of salary teachers make - a poetic rant that has been seen and forwarded millions of times on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Based on the poem that inspired a movement, What Teachers Make is Mali's sharp, funny, reflective, critical call to arms about the joys of teaching and why teachers are so vital to America today. It's a book that will be treasured and shared by every teacher in America - and everyone who's ever loved or learned from one.

Why I am a teacher.

This book perfectly explains the roles of teachers and "what they make." I was inspired by everything Mali said, and gained a new perspective on my chosen profession. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about becoming a teacher, anyone who is a teacher, or anyone just curious about, "what teachers make."

Satisfying and invigorating polemic

A paean to the teaching profession, less self-indulgent (and more bracing) than most of its competitors in the genre. It's well-written, though a few of the poems Mali uses to introduce his chapters do come close to flinch-worthiness.

The 2hr-plus length was "just long enough" for me -- I listened to the book during a single day's there-and-back-again commute.

Adam Verner's reading is excellent; he's obviously read the book in advance (I wish they all would!) and puts the emphasis and the humor in the right places. He sounds like he believes what he's saying, and that's what matters for this type of book.

Well worth the price for anyone interested in teaching as a profession, or anyone who enjoys books about the process of coming to terms with a demanding career.
