About this listen

From master storyteller Angela Hunt, a powerful story of a family’s journey toward healing and hope after an unimaginable loss.

Seventeen-year-old Maddie is left reeling after the unexpected passing of her beloved father. No one has any idea why he betrayed them all so spectacularly, but that’s exactly what his death feels like: a betrayal. With their world shattered, Maddie’s grieving mother sends her to spend a few months with her grandparents, thinking a change of scenery will do her good.

Susan and Frank, Maddie’s grandparents, are heartbroken over the loss of their son, but they welcome Maddie as an addition to their long-empty nest. Maddie settles in and makes friends at her new school, but she still wrestles with why her father took his own life. Then an unexpected twist throws all their lives into fresh turmoil, testing the very fabric of their faith. How Susan helps her granddaughter find hope, even as they both struggle with grief, makes this touching tale of love and recovery a must-read.

Suicide issues

Great writer but a very scary subject as it can encourage suicide if they don’t listen to the whole book

I cried for days

Having attempted suicide during my teen years, this story broke me. It was needed.

So powerful!

Angela has always been my favorite Christian Author and she’s outdone herself with this one. Caution though: it may be triggering for some readers. The subject matter hit deep with me as a survivor and I saw myself in Maddy and a couple others. Thank you, Ms. Angie for being obedient to God in going where you were told. 💜

Scriptural Truths

While this was full of scriptural, truths, and well written, it was way too full of death. This made it very depressing and hard to read. Granted, this does happen, but this is not a book you read for pleasure.

Heavy Subject; Written Well

This book is completely believable—the characters, the subject, the heart wrenching pain, and the only Way to hope again. Like all of Angela’s books, I could hardly put it down.

Very Depressing

I usually love books by Angela Hunt, but I had to stop listening to this one. It was extremely depressing and dragged on and on. This is a very serious topic and I know many struggle with it. I just couldn’t continue to listening to more and more people attempting it.
