About this listen

A gripping story of survival and the razor's-edge difference between perfect cruelty and perfect love.

"This isn't meant to be a confession. Not in any spiritual sense of the word. Yes, I'm in jail at the moment. I imagine I'll be here for a long time, considering. But I'm not writing this down for absolution, and I'm not seeking forgiveness, not even from myself. Because I'm not sorry for what I did to Rose. I'm just not. Not for any of it."

Ben Gibson is many things, but he's not sorry, and he's not a liar. He will tell you exactly about what happened on what started as a simple school camping trip in the mountains. About who lived and who died. About who killed and who had the best of intentions. But he's going to tell you in his own time. Because after what happened on that mountain, time is the one thing he has plenty of.

Smart, dark, and twisty, When I Am Through with You will leave listeners wondering what it really means to do the right thing.

Critic reviews

"A tense, masterful thriller that gripped me from the first page.” (Kara Thomas, author of The Darkest Corners)

“Complex and compelling, When I Am Through With You takes a hard look at the dark intensity boiling beneath the surface of an everyday teenage boy.” (Edgar Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis)

"Taut plotting combines with prose that’s by turns delicately plush and trenchantly foulmouthed for a riveting experience. Full of secrets and plot twists, Kuehn’s latest is a satisfying, sophisticated study in complicated relationships." (Kirkus, starred review)

It was a good time passer

The story follows a group of kids on the hiking trip that changed their lives (ending some)

The narrator did well. It was a good read. I didn't really find that there were many twist or anything shocking. Some things were predictable, but overall, still a good read.
There's closure for the most part.

You Might be a bit Disappointed

It's been a few days since I listened to this book, and I still don't know how I feel about it. Half the characters die in the end, and based on the ominous title, you would expect that, but the reality of how it happened was somewhat dull in comparison. I will say that I think the most striking scene, for me, was when Ben comes back from going on the treasure hunt search with Archie and he learns that it was all for nothing. I think it was a sharp, gripping understanding for both Ben and the reader. That kind of stuff is what I expected from this book, but every other death seems cliche and therefore meaningless. In terms of narration, I picked the book out because of both the ominous title and the fact that MacLeod Andrews read it, so I was really disappointed with the reading, and I don't think it's one of Andrews' best. Overall, I think the book should only be read in a guided manner through a book club. Personally, I wouldn't listen to it again otherwise.

Not my favorite...

Story needed more depth— the characters were underdeveloped and I found it hard to connect with the ramblings of this group of unremarkable teens. Story itself was a little random and melodramatic. Not my cup of tea.

Not a story for a weak stomach

The plot was too much. Unnecessary violence and sexual content. I wanted to fast forward many times. Also, there were too many parts of the plot that didn’t add up or make sense. The ending made no sense and was terrible. Don’t recommend. The person reading the story did a nice job though.
