About this listen
Hannah Payne awakens to a nightmare. She is lying on a table in a bare room, covered only by a paper gown, with cameras broadcasting her every move to millions at home. She is now a convicted criminal, and her skin color has been genetically altered. Her crime, according to the State of Texas: the murder of her unborn child, whose father she refuses to name. Her color: red. The color of newly shed blood.
In Hannah's America, sometime in the future, faith, love, and sexuality have fallen prey to politics. Convicted felons are no longer imprisoned and rehabilitated, but "chromed", forced to appear in a new and sinister form of reality TV, and released back into the population. Stigmatized in a hostile world, they must survive the best they can.
Until her arrest, Hannah had devoted her life to church and family. In seeking a path to safety, she is forced to question the values she once held true and the righteousness of a country that politicizes the personal.

On the run from ruthless killers, I take a job at a remote mountain estate tutoring a little boy. It's the ideal shelter from the storm that has engulfed my life, but there is a catch. The boy's father is the most beautiful, most dangerous man I've ever met. Darkly seductive and filthy rich, Nikolai Molotov is as magnetic as he is enigmatic. Bruised knuckles and tailored suits, tender endearments and dirty promises—everything about my new employer draws me in, even as my instincts warn that my safe haven just might be the devil's lair. My protector may turn out to be my captor.

Story
At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children. Both paths promise a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her pedigree is a lie. She must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society. And school couldn’t prepare her for the difficult choices she must make after graduation.

Story
Every year, Jess and Storey have made an annual pilgrimage to the most remote corners of the country, where they camp, hunt, and hike, leaving much from their long friendship unspoken. Although the state of Maine has convulsed all summer with secession mania—a mania that has simultaneously spread across other states—Jess and Storey figure it’s a fight reserved for legislators or, worst-case scenario, folks in the capital. But after weeks hunting off the grid, the men reach a small town and are shocked by what they find.

Story
In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. That’s why they’re banished for their 16th year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive. Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life - a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

Meh X 2
While I think the premise was a good one, it could have been so much more than a woman growing into herself type book. I did finish it but barely as by the last hour or so, I didn't really care what happened to the main character. Maybe buy it if it gets to the 3.99 bin but don't waste a credit.

Solid dystopian fantasy
This was a solid dystopian book reflecting on religion and society. I didn’t care for the ending. But the rest was worth the listen.

Relevant and well written
This book was a great listen. The story was fantastic and the reading was good as well. There were a few instances where the narration was cut weirdly (the narrator going from relaxed to alarmed as if the recordings had been done on different days and with different emphasis).

Good enough to read twice!
Any additional comments?
I'd read some reviews that were unfavorable about this book and they didn't hold true. Every minute of this book was captivating. Sometimes it takes me a while to get sucked into a book. This book had me from the start. If your open minded this book is easy read. If your ultra religious this book will offend you as it will challenge you too see things another way, to have compassion for mankind instead of only hold fast to rigid, unbending rules. This book is about love and acceptance.

When She Woke
This book felt like 2 stories smooshed together. The first half felt like a story similar to Handmaids Tale or a modern day Scarlett Letter. The second half... well... a completely different story line. Overall it was a good book, it just took several twists and turns leaving me wondering what the main theme was. The narrator was wonderful.

WOW! I wish there was a Second book to this!
I am not into religion books and I would not say this is a "religious" book. There is a lot about religion but it is more about finding the right path for yourself. This has a great plot and story. I could not "put it down"! I have recommended it to my brother and nephew. I would say that you might find it offensive if you are a very religious person. For example, I would not suggest this to my mom as she would probably not like it. But if you like a good story, good characters and a good book, then READ THIS!

This was a fantastic listen. Story was gripping and narration was superb. I would love a sequel to tie up the loose ends.
