About this listen

From New York Times Bestselling author Kristen Proby comes When We Burn, a single-dad, friends-to-lovers, small-town romance, and the first in the Blackwells of Montana series, set in Bitterroot Valley!

Bridger

I’m her safe place. I always have been. The torment that Dani Lexington went through at the hands of her father was something no child should have had to endure. But I was the lucky one she turned to. Our age difference and the fact that her brother was my best friend kept her off-limits, even though something was always there, lingering under the surface. But when she was old enough, she left Bitterroot Valley, and I was forced to move on with my life. I got married and had my little girl. Now, I’m a single dad, focused on my job as fire chief and making sure my daughter stays healthy after a mysterious illness has plagued her for the past year. But after Dani’s father dies, she returns to Bitterroot Valley and is now living across the street from my daughter and me. Dani’s no longer a child. No longer off limits. This time, I won’t let anything or anyone stop me from being her safe place again.

Dani

I’ve been in love with Bridger Blackwell for as long as I can remember. He’s a smoke show, kind, and gives the best hugs in the world. But best of all? He’s everything my sorry excuse for a father wasn’t. Now, I’m back in Bitterroot Valley, living across the street from Bridger and his adorable daughter. It doesn’t take long for all those old feelings to come rushing back, and every cell in my body knows that I belong with them. That they’re mine. Bridger’s arms are where I feel safest. They feel like home. I’m growing to depend on him, to truly love him and his daughter. But I have deep-rooted baggage, and Bridger’s past has decided to rear its ugly head. Will we survive this, or is our relationship doomed from the start?

Swoony MMC

The plot is great. The MMC works hard to show the FMC how he feels about her & that he’s not going anywhere. I love that there isn’t a third act break up & the book didn’t need one. I keep using my credits for this authors books because she doesn’t use the lazy act 3 break up & still has enough story to tell without having to use one. If there is a book with one I haven’t read it yet. Both narrators were great. The character growth was great also.

Good, peaceful, HEA, hallmark style story.

This is a good, peaceful, HEA, nothing overly exciting to the story. A palette cleanser, if you will. IMO; a safe easy book. If you’re looking for background noise while multitasking, or running errands with one earbud in, this is the perfect book to listen to.

Such an amazing, sweet book!!! And the filthy mouth on the MMC was 🔥🔥🔥🔥. No spoilers but I sobbed at the end, and I haven’t listened to a book in a very long time that has made me cry. I loved it!!

Something was missing

I had a lot of expectations for this one, just because Danny is a sister of Holden. And Holden was the best book of previous series. But something was missing, first more than half book was slow and sometimes a bit confusing. Danny was just sitting in her ass and waiting for Bridger to do everything. Sex scenes was mediocre at best. Not my favorite beginning of the series. The male narrator voice is hot as hell thought

You deserve the world. Let me give it to you.

After I read this book, I *knew* the audiobook was going to be amazing.
I was definitely not wrong! The friends to lovers aspect of their relationship really shone through in Erin and Sean’s voices, and I was hooked from the start.

Dani and Bridger have been friends all their lives. In fact, Bridger was Dani’s shelter from the storm growing up, and she always had a crush on him. Turns out so did he. The feeling was always there, but the timing was always off. But now that Dani is back in town, he won’t let her slip through his fingers again.

Erin was absolutely incredible as Dani. The strength she has after all she’s been through completely shines through in her voice. And Sean… He’s quickly becoming one of my favorites. In this case, the single dad who wants to give his daughter the world and the man who wants Dani. This role was made for him.

Bridger knows he needs to show Dani he’s serious about her in a way that goes beyond friendship and physical… even though the physical is pretty perfect. Both Erin and Sean flamed up my ear buds with every scene.
Since they were already friends, everything is seamless. Like a natural progression. Together, and with Birdie, they were hot, cute, sweet, and heartwarming. And the audio adds some extra feeling to it too.

Erin’s talent really shines through with Dani. Because while Bridger keeps asking her to use her words, shy Dani at the start of the book doesn’t want to. But the Dani at the end of the book is a confident woman and a real mama bear. It was a personal favorite to hear Dani’s character growth in Erin’s voice.

Sean gave me all the possessive hero vibes I (we all) know and love, but he gave me his vulnerability too. In his interactions with his kid, in the way he goes to bat for the people he loves, in the way he’s all in from the start, and in the way he communicates. And… the Chief moments. IYKYK.

Low-angst and with no third-act breakup, this was a swoony listen narrated by two super talented narrators who really knew how to bring out all the emotions.

Hot and Steamy

Plot is a little predictable but such a sweet story about lost love and regained confidence.

Okay

Was hoping this was as good as the Wilds but was disappointed that a story line didn't get started until the other half of the book. Also having Bridger use the f--- word ten times in a sentence isn't necessary. Also the graphic sex every five minutes in the book also is not necessary to make a steamy book good. I hope the next book in the series has a little more of a story line. Always love these narrators.
