About this listen

After 10 years of adventure, Colin Smith, the bastard son of a viscount, returns to the place he most despises - London. But only until he can sell off some of his treasures. He has no use for the stifling rules of the ton, but he's more than happy to play the game if it gets him what he wants.

Lady Claire, daughter of a marquess, is everything Colin loathes about the ton, but she is determined to win him over. Her life is a catalogue of dances and evening gowns, and thanks to an eidetic memory, she can remember every blasted, boring second of it. A treasure hunt for the Cleopatra Emerald promises adventure, but Claire wants more. If she can convince Colin Smith to take her with him as he travels the world, then she'll have the life she's always dreamed of. There's just one problem, he doesn't seem to like her much.

But Lady Claire loves a good challenge and the intellectual beauty may be on her way to the grandest adventure of all.

Contains mature themes.

Charmingly “odd” heroine

“She’s a good girl, a little odd, but kind….” That is how one of the other characters describes this heroine. She has the peculiar ability to remember everything that has happened to her and everyone that she has ever met. She deals with this by organizing it into mental lists. When she’s in an uncomfortable social situation, she has a tendency to reveal her list and all the associated details to whomever she is speaking; for example, every person named Smith who she’s ever met, what the circumstances were, and what she was wearing. Most people find this disconcerting or boring. Once the hero gets to know her, he finds it fascinating. The heroine knows early on that he is the one for her. The rest of the story is about how she persuades him that she is right for him, and how they overcome obstacles like class differences & preconceptions about female abilities
The novel ties in well with the others in the series. It was fun to see some of the more interesting repeat characters show up again in this book. I’m looking forward to the installment in the series.

Very sweet and a tiny aggravating

Most of the story was good and well played out. I love her heroines but the men seem to be dense. It’s a very lady and the tramp type of story. Love the little Bridgerton shoutout at the end.
