About this listen

America is Gone. It’s 2003 and American forces are assembled in Kuwait for the invasion of Iraq. In Paris an assassin wakes from a coma, in the Cascades a lone hiker watches a plane fly into a mountain and just north of the Equator a modern-day pirate, a rogue-Tasmanian, is witness to the unspeakable.

In one instant an inexplicable wave of energy has changed the world. From Canberra to Cairo things will never be the same. As the jihadists celebrate, Saddam plots revenge and the Israeli’s act, allied soldiers are left to fight a war without command. The functioning remnants of American government are left at Pearl Harbour, Guantanamo and in one desperate and isolated corner of the Pacific Northwest. A noxious waste darkens Europe’s skies and Australasia beckons as a sanctuary. An unknowable future struggles to be born.

Critic reviews

"John Birmingham’s ability to seamlessly merge the gritty realism of Tom Clancy with the raw speculation of Michael Crichton is like no other author I’ve ever read. Brilliant, nail-biting, thoughtful, and excruciatingly pertinent to our times." (James Rollins, New York Times best-selling author)

Great Story, mixed performence

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Love this book and all 3 in the series. Great thought provoking storyline.

Did Tom Weiner do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

appalling Australian accents and pronunciation of Australian names...most disappointing.

Great story and structure

Would you listen to Without Warning again? Why?

Great engaging story, very hard to stop listening to.

A strange narrator this, easy listening until he tries to do some accent, then it all falls apart and you end up feeling like your listening to some cheesy 80's BBC radio drama story with am dram voice over crews, all the time he is talking without an accent really easy to listen to him.

Any additional comments?

Well worth a listen, be a terrible shame to miss this just because the narrator has his odd moments. Please drop the accents Tom, your great to listen to up until that point ?

What did you love best about Without Warning?

All aspects of the story was a total draw in. The main people you could love and care about and the the baddies were very nasty and you love it when they get justice served on them. All of John's books are as enjoyable as this one i.e. Axis of Time Trilogy, After America and the list goes on Very Happy with this book :D

What did you like best about this story?

The Action and what was going to be the outcome of this disaster that has hit the world.

Which character – as performed by Tom Weiner – was your favorite?

Rhino and Julie also Kate pretty much all the heroes.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Where did everybody go? Just joking I have no idea, Without Warning seems good.:)

Any additional comments?

Just a great read if you like Sci Fi, War Disaster and suspense and want to care about Characters you are reading about this is the book.

John Birmingham gets it right again

But god the reader is dull and soulless (I hope he doesn’t read reviews!).
It’s another well paced adventure, but I’d suggest in this case to just buy the paperback.
