About this listen

The old world is buried. A new one has been forged atop the shifting dunes. Here in this land of howling wind and infernal sand, four siblings find themselves scattered and lost. Their father was a sand diver, one of the elite few who could travel deep beneath the desert floor and bring up the relics and scraps that keep their people alive. But their father is gone. And the world he left behind might be next.

Welcome to the world of Sand, a novel by New York Times best-selling author Hugh Howey. Sand is an exploration of lawlessness, the tale of a land ignored. Here is a people left to fend for themselves. Adjust your ker and take a last, deep breath before you enter.

Storytelling at its best!

Between the story and the narrator, this book makes you feel the story as if it is your own. Will listen to again, but first I am anxious to get started in the second book!

Great world building

Awesome in all ways. Characters. Plot. Twists. Emotionally wonderful. So real. I would recommend this to everyone.

Every bit as good as Wool!

Fantastic story highlighted by mesmerizing visions of the impossible: traveling through sand. All my life I’ve had recurrent dreams of such an occurrence: walking through that which is solid. Great beasts that burst forth from subterranean lairs beneath my feet. Deep oceans and beautiful clear tide pools which required only the peeling back of carpeting on the living room to be revealed; great and huge and beautiful and frightening creatures beneath the solid, all usual and normal in my sleeping brain. And so this novel struck me in a very inner, private place, as if the author had peered in to my dreams and brought them to life.

In quantum physics nothing is solid. Everything breaks down into particles. And those into particles— until no more remain but the tiniest of quarks vibrating against each other. All matter is but a mass of vibrations. And according to the laws of quantum physics, moving through sand (or walls, or stone or concrete) is entirely possible.

It is the wonder of my dreams combined with these little-known laws of quantum matter that moved me so much throughout this story. I can’t wait to start Across the Sand next!

It’s wonderful!

Such a great book!
Hugh Howey does it again. I loved Wool, Shift, and Dust. Sand is even better.

Well worth the time and credit

I’m ready for more. A story well told in a world well crafted, and with characters I want to meet again.

Woah! That’s imagination.

Intriguing way to view the physical universe. I am truly impressed, both by the narrative and the narration. Phrasing, by the prose and by the vocalization combine for much more than the parts. Maybe I should go through the book again, because as it’s told, I found myself somewhat distracted by these rhythmic cadences. I’m ready for more, excited to move on.

Slow at beginning but picks up steadily. Interesting. Not as good as Wool so far , but definitely worth continuing.

Another good one from Hugh Howey. I just began really began listening again to books on Audible; it was a good one to start with.

Blown away

Wow! What a beautiful story! This is legitimate literature. A classic. You know- there is so much out there now that is made easily available to us that is just..absolute shit. I had almost forgotten what reading something genuinely good feels like. I am most definitely recommending this book

Just the Best

This is the best book I think I’ve ever listened to as an audiobook. Mental surprises along the way. Sudden realizations. Very well written and crafted.

A+

Well worth your time. Good story, good narration, and what’s ever better than those is the world Howey built. It’s candy for the imagination, it makes you yearn for more.
