About this listen

There are countless “rules” about writing. Two spaces after punctuation, or one? To adverb or not to adverb? Do you talk about your work before it’s finished, or not?

T.S. Eliot said you have to know the rules before you can break them, but the rules about the rules are constantly changing.

Well, not all of them. Some rules are nonnegotiable, and this short audiobook will give you a quick rundown of six of them. Part of his Writer’s Library of books, C. Dennis Moore presents the Writing Rules: 6 Rules to Follow to Awake the Writer Within.

Six simple rules!!!

About 6 months ago I read Writing Rules and recently Mr. Moore sent me a review copy of the audiobook. The following is an update to my original review. I spend a lot of time reading fiction, reading nonfiction not so much, so it surprised me today when I picked up Writing Rules and read it in one sitting – about 45 minutes to be exact. While it is a series of six rules for writing – an aim that it fulfils admirably – it really might be classified as six rules for living your life hidden inside a book on writing. A few years back (1/2015) I retired from my last career, something I truly loved until I didn’t, thanks to changes that became intolerable. I told myself I was going to memorialize that experience in prose – and I have yet to let those words flow onto the screen or paper. Like they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, however Mr. Moore’s six rules have made a significant dent in my hesitance at doing what I said so long ago. Does it sound like I enjoyed this book? No, I freaking loved Writing Rules simply because there are six no-nonsense rules for getting things done – writing or anything else. So, listening to these six rules read by Samantha Rauh not only brought back my original feelings but reinforced the need to get back to exercising them as appropriate. Samantha’s narration really brought this short work to life and made it even more enjoyable/impactful than reading it the initial time.

A well-written short read from a good author

Having read, now my sixty-ninth book, Writing Rules (Writer's Library), was my fortieth read from author C. Dennis Moore. I wrote "A well-written 21-page/26-minute short read/listen on the "rules" of writing". This book is so him, yet Samantha Rauh's narration added life to the book, I really hope he uses her for some of his other audio works. I look forward to the next work from him. I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. As always, I look forward to reading more from this author.
