About this listen

Of number-one New York Times best-selling author Sue Grafton, NPR's Maureen Corrigan said, "Makes me wish there were more than 26 letters." With only two letters left, Grafton's many devoted listeners will share that sentiment.

X: the number 10. An unknown quantity. A mistake. A cross. A kiss.

X: the shortest entry in Webster's Unabridged. Derived from Greek and Latin and commonly found in science, medicine, and religion. The most graphically dramatic letter. Notoriously tricky to pronounce: Think xylophone.

X: the 24th letter in the English alphabet.

Sue Grafton's X: Perhaps her darkest and most chilling novel, it features a remorseless serial killer who leaves no trace of his crimes. Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this sociopath. The test is whether Kinsey can prove her case against him before she becomes his next victim.

Critic reviews

“Grafton’s endless resourcefulness in varying her pitches in this landmark series, graced by her trademark self-deprecating humor, is one of the seven wonders of the genre." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

“Excellent...pulse-pounding...Grafton has never been better.” (Booklist, starred review)

“Ratcheting up the heat as she heads toward the finish line of her alphabetically-framed series, Grafton has turned in a corker of a novel with X, upping her already high-level game.” (The Boston Globe)

Where does X rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was my first audio book and I have followed this series for over 20 years. However, most likely fourth on my list of most enjoyed so far. I am almost finished with my seventh audio book now. I became a member in mid August so am loving Audible.

What was one of the most memorable moments of X?

Oddly, I love the way unimportant characters jump out at you in her books. The description of the visit with her pregnant friend and the "baby girl" was such a moment.

Which character – as performed by Judy Kaye – was your favorite?

Duh....Kinsey of course

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Besides the one mentioned above, I enjoyed how true love endured, and how second chances are possible.

Follower of the series

Enjoyable and entertaining as always. Well narrated and easy to follow. Liked that the ending was not predictable.

If you could sum up X in three words, what would they be?

Nicely executed plot.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kinsey Milhone (again). I can empathize with her, and like the way she is drawn (not the super sleuth other authors try to make their protagonists be).

What about Judy Kaye’s performance did you like?

Good narration, and the characters' voices were nicely distinguished.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not an extreme reaction, but quite enjoyable.

"X" is for excellent

So glad I disregarded the critics of this book. I have always LOVED this series and this one was no different. Highly recommend.

I do not know why the description of this book was so centered on the term serial killer. I almost gave it a pass because, frankly, serial killers have been done to death

Fortunately I put my faith in the enjoyment I received in the other Sue Grafton and ordered this one anyway. So glad I did. It is another excellent addition to the series.

Yes, there was a serial killer. And he was a central character in the book. But the focus wasn't on him or his crimes. The focus was the story behind him and did not include all the normal serial killer blather. He was just one of the stories in the book

Excellent as always

I enjoyed this book. Glad I didn't listen to the naysayers. Couldn't hardly wait for get to the end to see if I'd figured out what was what. Some I got right or close to it but hadn't quite figured out the ending exactly as Sue had but then again. I'm the reader not the writer 😀

Another great story
